Bowling Club at Cornell

New Member Information

Welcome to the Bowling Club! This page has important info for new members of the club as well as those who might be interested in joining.

Fall 2008 Orientation

The bowling club will have a table at ClubFest in August. We'll have information about the club, tournaments, and our weekly league. You will also have the opportunity to sign up to be on our mailing list. This year we will not have an orientation event at the bowling alley; instead you may come to one of our practices and bowl with our members to get a feel for the club before actually joining.

Before you join the club/come to practice:

  1. Make sure you know where the bowling alley is! It's in the basement of Helen Newman Hall on North Campus, directly across from Appel Community Center. They are open Monday-Saturday, 5:00 PM til late. Our club practices Monday and Thursday evenings from 5-7.
  2. If and when you are sure you want to join, you can bring cash or check payable to Bowling Club at Cornell to pay for semesterly or yearly dues. Dues for 2008-2009 are $65 per semester or $100 for the whole year. You may contact Scott (sms458) for more information. If you sign up for the mailing list, you’ll get e-mails with all the details at the beginning of the semester.
  3. Fill out a member information form. This is just so we can get basic info about our members. This form will be available at each practice from either Sarah or Brian. Make sure to fill this out before you pay your dues (or at the same time).

Once you join:

  1. Check out the (intercollegiate) tournament schedule. It consists of intercollegiate tournaments which take place at other schools, on-campus tournaments which are mainly fundraisers from other organizations, and non-sanctioned tournaments which we occasionally participate in for fun. We don't have tryouts for our tournament team; instead, we go by your average in our weekly league. See our bylaws for how that works. The guy to talk to for more tournament info is Brian Levine (bl76)
  2. Check out the (bowling club) tournament schedule. During our Saturday practices we have our own club “tournaments” that all members can participate in. We do some exciting formats such as Baker (5 players bowl one single game with each player rolling two frames), Scotch Doubles (two players alternate first shot and second shot), and No Tap (9 pins counts as a strike!). We give out prizes for these and usually have some pizza or snacks around.
  3. Sign up for league: More info about league is usually given out during the 2nd or 3rd week of club practice. We form teams of 3 or 4 and bowl against other teams in the club. Check out our league page from last semester to see how this works. Contact Kyle Zumstein (kmz4) if you want more info.
  4. Order equipment: Brian Levine (bl76) is also in charge of ordering equipment for the club. We get significant discounts on balls, shoes, bags, etc. Brian brings a black binder to each practice which holds all of the catalogs and pricing sheets. You are free to browse through it at your leisure. Also see company websites. Other club members would be happy to offer advice as to which piece of equipment to get, so just ask us! Orders can take anywhere from 1 week to 1 month to ship, so if you need something right away, sometimes it's better to order online or from Bill LaRock (manager of the bowling alley and owner of pro shop), but please note collegiate bowler discounts are not in effect with either party.
  5. Bowl outside of practice: All club members are entitled to $1 games any time outside of practice. We will either have membership cards or give the front desk a list of club members. Just show your ID card and say that you are a club member to receive the discounted rate. You can also get free shoe rental

At Practice:

  1. Free shoe rental is available for all club members. Just go up to the front desk and tell the person there you are a member of club or that you're trying the club out for a week. Usually you need to trade in your ID card to get the shoes.
  2. One lane courtesy: As we have some serious bowlers in the club, please be courteous when you are up to bowl. Look one lane to your left and one lane to your right and make sure it's clear before going on the lane. Once you throw your first shot, step off the lane and let others around you bowl while you wait for the ball return. Following these guidelines will help practices and league run much more smoothly.
