Buds: Cornell's premiere men's Ultimate team
News! (updated 10/24/09)
Buds at Purple Valley: The Buds descended upon the small yet beautiful Williamstown, MA for Williams College's annual Purple Valley on October 17-18. Finally at a tournament with our full squad, Saturday provided plenty of playing time for the younger guys, while Sunday proved to be the best competition of the season so far. Unfortunately, the Buds fell just short, losing on universe point in the finals. Full results can be found here: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=127&id=6740.
Buds win the Maryland Brodown!: The Buds travelled to College Park for the Maryland SpaceBastards Brodown on October 3-4. Although missing key veterans to Mid-Atlantic Club Regionals, we came out firing on all cylinders, amassing a 91-11 point differential while going 7-0 and winning the tournament. Many thanks to Aaron Gemmell's Mom for coming out to cheer us on and provide snacks. Full results can be found here: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=18&id=6665.
Buds X win the Cornell X/Y Invite!: On August 26-27 we hosted the first annual Cornell X/Y Invite right here in Ithaca. All teams attending brought lots of rookies and we split ourselves into 2 squads (Buds X and Buds Y) in order to allow more playing time for everyone. Even with our split roster, Buds X went undefeated and placed 1st in the tournament! Buds Y also did well, losing only to Buds X and Williams to finish 3rd. Overall a great weekend for the Buds. Directions to Reis Practice Fields
Car/Bike
Find Pine Tree Road on a map (on the bottom right of the map). As you head south on Pine Tree Road, you will cross an intersection with Mitchell (to the west) and Ellis Hollow (to the east). Reis Tennis Center is the first right hand turn after that intersection as you continue south on Pine Tree. If you are driving, park in the Reis lot. To get to the fields we play on, walk along the left hand side of the tennis center, past the building and then past the outdoor courts. You will walk right onto a big field, that is where we play.
Bus
The 53 bus leaves Uris Hall at 4:43PM and arrives at East Hill Plaza at 4:51PM. Although we understand that you may not be able to make an earlier bus, this option will be cutting things a bit tight.
If you have extra time and want to spend some time throwing around before practice, the 54 bus leaves Statler Hall at 4:22PM and arrives at East Hill Plaza at 4:34PM. Taking the earlier bus will also provide the time to fully cleat up and warm up a bit on your own before practice begins.
If you miss the 53 bus, you can take the 52 bus, but you will be late to practice. It leaves Uris Hall at 4:48PM and arrives at East Hill Plaza at 4:56PM.
The bus will drop you off near the P&C food store. When you get off the bus, walk south towards the intersection of Mitchell and Ellis Hollow and then walk straight through the intersection. Reis tennis center will be on your right. To get to the fields we play on, turn right to walk towards the tennis center and than walk along the left hand side of the tennis center, past the building and then past the outdoor courts. You will walk right onto a big field, that is where we play.
To get home, you need to take the 93 bus. It leaves East Hill Plaza (from the parking lot, NOT from where the other buses dropped you off) at 7:06PM and arrives at RPCC at 7:26PM. We will finish practice at 6:55PM to give people enough time to walk over to the bus stop.
2008-2009 Season News
Nationals: Buds place 9th at Nationals! After finishing pool play with a record of 3-1 (beating NC State, Luther, and Kansas, while losing to Colorado) and taking 2nd place in pool B, we faced Pittsburgh in the pre-Quarters for a rematch of the Regional Finals. After a very well-played, hard fought game from both teams, we fell to Pittsburgh 15-13. After this loss, we finished the tournament with two more victories to tie for 9th place in the country, with an overall record of 5-2 at the tournament. Coming out on Sunday both intense and unrelenting, we won the finals 15-8 to win the region and were awarded a bid to nationals for the first time since 2002! Full results can be seen here: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=18&id=5918 Nationals will be held in Columbus, OH, on May 22-25.

About the Buds
Founded in 1973, the Buds have a storied history and are one of the oldest programs in college ultimate. We have made nationals multiple times and are perennial contenders in the Metro East. We practice 4-5 days per week all school year and travel to about 4-5 tournaments in the local area in each the fall and spring semesters. We usually fly west to a tournament in February and then drive down South for Spring Break to face other competitive teams. Though many of the students who come out for the Buds have previous High School ultimate experience, we welcome players of any experience and skill level that have an enthusiasm to work hard and learn about the game.
In addition to the Buds, Cornell has a fully functional B team, the Shake. The Shake also travel South for Spring Break and play many local tournaments. The Shake focus on developing the fundamentals needed before you are ready to play with the Buds.
Tryouts for the Buds occur early in the fall semester soon after classes start. If you're interested in joining the Buds or Shake, please send the captains an email and we will put you on our mailing list where we announce tryout, practice, and tournament schedules.
