Insectapalooza 2009!
The Snodwiggs help out at the Insect Zoo, one of Insectapalooza's most
popular attractions.
Every year thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds swarm to Comstock Hall for Insectapalooza, the Cornell University Deparment of Entomology's annual open house event. Started in 2004 and held during every October since, Insectapalooza is a one-day insect fair in which the entomology department opens its doors to the public for insect-related games, food, and educational exhibits. Each year the event attracts between 2000 and 3000 people!
Among the most popular attractions at Insectapalooza are the Insect Zoo, which showcases a multitude of live, exotic arthropods from all over the world; Cockroach Races, in which spectators are encouraged to place bets on their favorite roach; and Pondering Insects, which invites young visitors to fish out aquatic insects from a pond and identify them. There are also tours of the Cornell University's immense insect collection, face-painting, arts & crafts, informational exhibits about current research being conducted by Cornell entomologists, and even the occasional insect snack! Would you like to try roasted crickets?
Since 2006, Snodgrass and Wigglesworth has been a driving force behind Insectapalooza. For Insectapalooza 2006, the Snodwiggs were placed in complete control and tasked with organizing the entire open house. Although it was a daunting challenge to say the least, we pulled through and attracted one of the largest crowds that Comstock Hall has ever seen! Many of the activities that our club invented for 2006 (including Pondering Insects, Insect Snacks, and the "Build-a-Bug" crafts station) have now become core traditions of the event.
Currently, the event is jointly organized by a committee of undergraduates, graduate students, and entomology faculty. However, many of the innovations introduced by Snodwiggs are still incorporated into the event are are constantly being improved. Moreover, through our continued involvement in Insectapalooza, we help to create new activities each year that prove to be incredibly popular, such as the Butterfly Room which was created for Insectapalooza 2008 by Snodwiggs member Jeffry Petracca.
Come back to this page next fall for more information on Insectapalooza 2012! Insectapalooza is a fun and exciting event that no one should miss! All Snodwigg members are enthusiastically encouraged (but not required) to participate in the open house and to spread the word to all of their friends!
