[CBS] 7pm Phillips 203: Chuck Tompkins: Saved by Grace

Hello CBS Family,

This week we'll be diving back into Ephesians with Pastor Chuck Tompkins as he unfolds the 2nd Chapter for us. Here Paul tells us:

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast."

Paul explains to the Ephesians what salvation is. What we were saved from, what we are saved by and what we are saved for. He thought it was important that they knew the details. Not only would they be even more amazed at God's grace but they would know how to go about sharing the Gospel God's way. I think God has graciously placed this passage in front of us at just the right time as we keenly consider the salvation of souls.

Please join us:

[CBS] This.Friday- 7:00pm Phillips 101

Hello CBS Family,

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chron 7:13-14

The semester is definitely chugging along and his mercies are certainly new every morning. We have also been through quite a bit together: Ephesians, God's Sovereignty, IBS, Kurt from PESI, Felly Dinner. What do you make of these past few weeks? Has God been good? Has he been real? He has. He is. Isn't he?

This Friday night we're going to slow down just a little, consider where we've been, where God is taking us and then to come before the Lord in prayer and praise. Specifically we'll be praying for our unsaved friends and family and for Coffeehouse, the up coming evangelistic evening. It'll be a night of searching our minds and hearts, a night to grieve over unbelief: our own and other's, and a night to trust everything into the hands of the One who can and will. Please join us.

Then Joshua said to the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you."

As a way to prepare our hearts, let's consider how we might consecrate ourselves. What wicked way is God calling you to turn away from? For me(henry) I think it would be my haughty and presumptuous heart as well as my desire for prestige and security.

"Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." Isaiah 1:18

Come Lord Jesus!

Song Ideas for Coffeehouse - please let us know!

02/14/2009 01:58:00 PM
Posted by Yvette Wong

Hey everyone,

The theme for coffeehouse this year is "How would you describe God?". All the skits/songs/testimonies will try to reflect a different characteristic of God, and the message at the end will sum it up with God as being passionate (in terms of his pursuit of us, and also his passion/suffering to save us).

THUS,
** we are still looking for song ideas which reflect an attribute of God, such as:
- existence/creator (possible song: You do all things well)
- just/holy
- relational
- merciful
- faithful
- unchanging
- loving/redemptive (possible song: Glory of it all)

Hit reply if you have any song ideas which you think do a good job of reflecting an attribute of God, which is also meaningful to you!!
* and if you are interested in helping out with music, PLEASE tell Richard Kim asap.
* and if you have any skit ideas, let Janice know!
* and if you have the heart to share your testimony, also please let us know.

"For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake" - 2 Cor 4:5

In Christ,
Caleb and Yvette

We'll be back in Philips 101, and we'll also be signing up for Bible studies at the end of CBS.

Friday 2/13 7:00pm Philips 101

"Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord."
1 Thessalonians 3:7-8

Let us press on to acknowledge the Lord (Hosea 6:3)!
Love in Christ,

[CBS] Coffeehouse

02/05/2009 10:30:00 PM

Hello Family :)

As it has been mentioned the past couple of weeks, we felt that we should elaborate on what this "Coffeehouse" thing actually is. For instance, what do we do at Coffeehouse? How do we prepare for Coffeehouse? However, these questions are grounded in a deeper question: Why do we have Coffeehouse and what is its purpose?

We know that it gets difficult to read long emails so we will try and keep it short, but we hope that you (yes you!) will really prayerfully consider these words and how they apply to your own life. If you don't have time or you just don't want to read a long email skip down to the Challenges part.

This past (fall) semester, our goal as an Evangelism ministry was to try and build Chinese Bible Study up as a fellowship that truly understood the joy of salvation that came through the Gospel (Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for our sins) in such a real way that our hearts would have no greater desire than to "teach transgressors (people who have sinned) [God's] ways" (Psalm 50:10-13). And to equip you guys to "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope (in Christ Jesus) that you have" (1 Peter 3:15). This semester, it's time to put more of an emphasis on action. In a sense we're "sending you guys out" into the Cornell campus and amongst your friends to let them know the reason for the hope that we have!

One practical way to do this is to host an event that more people (such as people who are not Christians) might feel comfortable attending. In past Coffeehouses we've had skits and other performances portraying an aspect of what Christianity is and/or how it is to live as a Christian. We've also had testimonies where certain people talk about how their life was before they found God and accepted Jesus as their savior, and how it's changed their lives. We also provide food and drinks (coffee included!) and a time where people can talk and get to know each other. And finally, there is a short message where someone talks about what we, as Christians, believe in.

The ultimate goal of Coffeehouse is simply to provide a way for people to hear the Gospel and the Good News that Jesus loves them and died for their sins. If you don't feel comfortable sharing the someone on your own, bring them to Coffeehouse! Even if they are simply an acquaintance or someone you met in lab or in Ho Plaza, inviting them to Coffeehouse is a way to for us to let others know of the great gift that we have been given and it also helps us to have a "full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ" (Philemon 1:5).

Challenges
So what does all this mean for us as a fellowship and as individuals? How do we put all this into action?
1. Pray hard

  • pray for your friends (or non-friends) who are not believers that they would be open to coming (be specific!)
  • pray for your own hearts, that you would be bold in inviting people
  • pray for Coffeehouse, that we would trust God in all our planning
2. Get Involved
  • we know it's starting to get busy, but we'll need all the help you can give!

Just as a reminder there is a COFFEEHOUSE MEETING TOMORROW (FRIDAY) where we'll talk about Coffeehouse a little more, brainstorm, get some logistics down, and most importantly PRAY.
We will be meeting at 6:30 in front of CALL AUDITORIUM the same place that IBS is being held so you won't have to walk far after the meeting!

We hope that you will join us, whether it be in prayer or action, to glorify God through this event and let His name be known!

In Christ alone,
Caleb and Yvette
