Hello CHI members,
This is your first CHI Weekly of the semester! Here is a compilation of the events on campus that you may be interested in attending or becoming involved in and their respective contact information =)
Cornell Health International Opportunities:
If you missed the first meeting, here is a brief summary of the opportunities that CHI has in store for the semester.
1. Salubrion ( CHI’s own publication!)
If there is a certain topic in health that you are truly interested in and would like others to become aware of this issue? Interested in reporting, journalism, or publishing? If so, then becoming a writer for our journal is the perfect job for you! What you write about is entirely up to you. We only ask that the article you write about is related to health in some way. It could be a domestic issue or an international issue, although we tend to report on issues occurring abroad. We are constantly looking for writers to enlighten readers with new health concerns that we remain ignorant of. If you think you would like to learn more and participate, contact Peter Meng at pms72@cornell.edu.
2. Domestic Projects
Looking for opportunities to get involved in the local community? Think you would like to participate in educating youths on issues regarding nutrition? Then contact Adnan Abdullah @ ama226@cornell.edu.
3. The Gates Project
The gates project was an art project that took place in Central Park, NY from 1979-2005. The project was coordinated and developed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and consisted of placing 7,500 gates throughout the park. Each gate was sheathed in saffron colored cloths.
This semester, CHI is tackling on a new project based off of the gates project. We intend to showcase our own version of these gates across the arts quad, but each gate will consist of panels depicting a health issue of concern that is taking place abroad. In essence, we hope that as people trek across the arts quad, they will read our panels and become more conscious of current global health matters. If you any ideas on how we can develop this project or would like to help us with building it, contact Jimmy Lam at jl948@cornell.edu.
4. Unite for Sight
Once again, those of you who would like to attend the Unite for Sight conference and network with some of the world’s top NGOs, contact Jimmy atjl948@cornell.edu.
Follow the instructions:
1. Read up on the conference details: http://www.uniteforsight.org/conference/
2. Note the dates and make sure there are no conflicts with your schedule.
3. Co-pay will be $10 or more, depending on how much hotels cost. Expect and do not be surprised to pay up to $50 for the co-pay though. For now, we are looking at around $10, crossing fingers.
4. We will hopefully arrive by Friday night (leave Ith around 3-5pm on Friday) and stay Friday and Saturday night and leave Sunday 5pm. this would be ideal. If not then we will arrive early Saturday and stay for Saturday night and leave Sunday around 5pm.
5. If you decide this is right for you e-mail me the following information by Tomorrow (Tuesday 2/1) 6pm:
Your FULL name, your netID, and your year of graduation
6. If more than three (3) of you get back to me, then I will select from a hat.
5. Global Health Minute
This semester we would like to do a little reporting of our own. During general body meetings, we would like to have presentations on global health topics that are of interest to you. You can be the one to present, or you can let us know what your topic is and we can try to present to the club. Raising awareness is an important aspect of our organization, and we are committed to recognizing health issues across the world. We hope that we can let others realize what is occurring beyond the borders of this country, and hopefully inspire them to come up with projects of their own to aid foreign countries in their health related devastations. This is an opportunity for you become more active in the club and for you to feel in tune with the objectives of our organization! It’ll also be your moment to experience leadership! We truly welcome all to participate! Contact Jimmy (jl948) if you have a topic of interest!
6. Joining Committees
Another way to really get involved in the club is to join a committee. We have several committees available that allow you to work closely with e-board members. Some committee positions you may be interested in include internal relations, events coordinator, current events writer. If there is a certain sector of the club that you would like to work within, please contact John Rhee at jyr5@cornell.edu.
Aside from CHI….
Heifer International:
Heifer International is hosting a Snowsculpting Competition THIS Saturday (5 Feb) from 1:30-3:30 in the Arts and Sciences Quad? $5.00 entry fee/team, and there is no limit on the # of people per team. Also, any snow-sculpture designs can be made (just phallic ones have to be removed at the end for obvious purposes). The winning group gets a Starbucks gift basket. And, FREE HOT COCOA will be served to all who attend!
Sincerely,
Karmen Au
