Announcement - Death of Professor Ray J Wu
As an accomplished researcher and educator in Molecular Biology and Genetics, Ray Wu was well known for his distinguished service in education and facilitation of international scientific cooperation and his contribution to the development of life science in China. Wu founded the China-United States Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Examination and Application (CUSBEA) program. Wu was also a pioneer in genetic engineering and one of the fathers of plant genetic engineering. Following a prominent career in genetic engineering recombinant DNA research, Wu focused his research on one of the important problems of the world - food production and hunger. Beyond his 300+ original research papers published in international journals in the areas of genetic engineering, medicine, plant biology and plant biotechnology, he held five patents covering a wide range of genetic engineering methods. Wu was also a loyal and generous ambassador and supporter of Cornell University. He served as a department chair (1976-1978) of the Section of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology at Cornell University and was the former advisor to the first CSSA at Cornell. Professor Ray J Wu passed away at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca on Feburary 10th, 2008 at the age of 79.
At this special moment, CSSA members would like to express our condolences to this accomplished scientist and outstanding gentleman.
The memorial service will be held on June 15, 2008, in Ithaca, New York. A Memorial Symposium will be held on October 3-4, 2008, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
