Free Asperger Syndrome and Autism Mentoring
About A SPLINT's Services
A SPLINT is a website that contains useful information regarding any disorder of the "Autism Spectrum," including but not limited to Asperger Syndrome and Semantic Pragmatic Disorder. The website provides procedures and directions on how to get started with free mentoring and other life services. A SPLINT even features detailed pages containing instructions to teach those with disabilities various life skills. Dr. Jeff Deutsch, a Cornell alum, has worked with CUDA on raising awareness for AS and allowing students and other members of the community to know more about A SPLINT's services.
About Dr. Jeffrey Deutsch
Jeff is a life coach and presenter, helping people with AS (Asperger Syndrome) get along better with NTs (neurotypicals), who are not on the autism spectrum - and vice versa. He works with individuals and groups, both "Aspies" and NTs.
While some life coaches have taken courses about AS, Jeff has gone through Home-based Experiential Lifelong Learning (HELL)! He's actually been an Aspie - an experience no amount of training can duplicate.
When Jeff grew up, people knew little and cared less about AS. He had to struggle to understand how the NT world works, and to learn how to find and then keep friends, jobs and other relationships.
Jeff's coaching philosophy is empowering. He helps his clients understand what is going on around them and why, shows what actions would most likely produce what kind of results and then supports their informed decisions. He has helped people deal with, among other things:
- Substance abuse
- Family relationships
- Money management
- Getting along and doing well on the job
- Finding a new job
- And more!
Jeff emphasizes these principles to his clients:
- If you keep doing what you have been doing, you will keep getting what you have been getting.
- If it were easy, everyone - including you - would already be doing it.
- Life is a series of trade-offs. You always have to accept some things that you don't like in order to get other things that you do.
- The best plans in the world will only work if you do.
- You can only get what you want by doing and saying things that others consider to be good - by their standards, even if they're not the same as yours.
Qualifications
Jeff is a Cornellian and an "Artie," having graduated from Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. He then earned his MA and PhD from George Mason University, where among other things he met his NT wife Emily...and hence has since also earned his MR (Married and Respectable)!
Jeff has taught from first grade through graduate level, from Special Education through Honors and Advanced Placement, for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, George Mason University, Keiser University, International College at Beijing, South University, Nova Southeastern University and Chadron State College.
Jeff is active in Asperger Adults of Greater Washington (AAGW), Asperger's Association of New England (AANE) and Toastmasters International. As a Toastmaster, he has served as a District Bookstore Manager, Fall Conference Steering Committee Member, Division Education Chair and Assistant Area Governor and earned the rank of Competent Communicator. He blogs about his experiences helping Aspies and NTs understand each other better at Building Common Ground.
