...Did you know: The custom of using jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween actually
came from the Irish who carved out turnips or beets to use as lanterns. On
Halloween, these lights represented the souls of the dead or goblins freed from
the dead. When the Irish emigrated to America, they found that turnips were
scarce but pumpkins were abundant. Pumpkins have been a part of Halloween
celebrations ever since. (taken from the Lowe's "How-To Library"
website.)
Has family life and schoolwork got you feeling isolated from
community living or are you coming to Cornell with a family? Consider
affiliating with a new registered student group called Students with Families.
The purpose for establishing Students with Families is to provide networking
opportunities, social and informational programming, and to represent the needs
and opinions of students with dependents to various constituents on campus
(Senior Administration, the Assemblies, the Graduate School, the Faculty
Senate, etc.). Our longer-term goal is to work with the administration to
establish affordable, quality childcare for students with families. In the
meantime, connect with other students who are similarly situated.
