These Are Powers

FRIDAY 04.24.09

11PM

ALPHA DELT , 777 Stewart Ave

Slope Media, generous as they are, have agreed to collaborate with Fanclub to bring Brooklyn-based THESE ARE POWERS to our dear Ithy.

Exciting!

Review by M.L. Thrope
“Dark and jarring but not dance-floor averse, the Brooklyn/Chicago trio These Are Powers make their debut for the respected Dead Oceans label. If you’re one of the many who’ve been pummeled (and liked it!) by TAP’s chaotically compelling live gigs, then All Aboard Future is your train and we suggest you get on it (not under it).

While the monkey-see, monkey-repeat Internet (you know who you are, Internet) tends to hurl knee-jerk genre-markers like “No Wave” and “postpunk” at These Are Powers, All Aboard Future is too slippery to be pinned down like that; the trio puts an electro-primitive stamp on industrial music, sometimes suggesting a less-smeary Gang Gang Dance exiled to a world that gets 10 minutes of sunshine a day (in the summer).

Adventurous club DJ’s ought to be making “Easy Answers” into a left-field hit, though we’re partial to stormier excursions like “Light After Sound.”
It’s worth noting the attention paid to All Aboard Future’s packaging—the band invited 11 artists and one writer to contribute work—in an age when music tends to live in a virtual state.”

BRIAN ISETT, once described as “a transsexual bedroom electro weirdo that sleeps all day and hunts in the night,” is opening. creepy, yet promising.

Also opening - BESNYO from Buffalo, NY !!
Dreamy, melodic, amblient. It’s like dreary upstate livin in a neat little 3 minute package.

A historic day. April 4th. Events galore, and not least of which, a massive Fanclub show that should grip and delight our friends of all stripes. Also, since an officer from Fanclub ruined Slope Day by voting for the Pussycat Dolls–which is not a good joke–we hope this show will cover our tails, or at least his/hers.We’ve been trying to wrangle a number of these acts over the past two semesters, and–God works in mysterious ways–they’re all converging on one (fated?) night.

But what’s all this about destiny? Let’s talk in units of desire:

April 4th Fanclub show: 300 units

Girl Talk: 220 units

DJ night at local bar: 150 units

Reggae: 70 units

I hope that puts things in context. THIS SHOW IS VERY FANCY AND VERY RARE.

Saturday, April 4th @ the Big Red Barn, 9:30pm (after the Cornell Design League fashion show), $5 w/ CUID, $6 w/o

U.S. Girls (one girl, many textures) >>> http://www.myspace.com/usgirlsss

Ducktails (excessively talented one-man poet of the loop, ft. guitar and drum beats) >>> http://www.myspace.com/ducktailss

Chaw Mank (ft. members of Mouthus and Sightings, a.k.a. noise music’s Rolling Stones) >>> evicted from MySpace due to confusion between their musical output and terrorism

Kurt Vile (this band could become your life) >>> http://www.myspace.com/kurtvileofphilly

Teengirl Fantasy (electronic music with enough layers of dance music to require a manual) >>>http://www.myspace.com/teengirlfantasy

Oh my god what will I wear.

Friday March 27 Come See

Garotas Suecas

Come to William Keeton House this Friday to see one of Spin Magazine’s “20 Must-See Artists” play their blend of Brazilian beats and garage rock for your dancing pleasure. Coming out of Sao Paulo, Brazil and fresh off a heavily praised set of performances at South by Southwest, these rockers take notes from Os Mutantes and Otis Redding to cook up some tasty toe tappers. Seeing these dudes + girl play last week in Austin was like grooving in a simpler time when girls wore poodle skirts and beer was Coca Cola. They totally rock.

But first, for all you IC noise kids, all you Crass lovers, and all the experimentally minded:

Aa (BIG A little a)

Listening to big A little reminds me of the old days too; except now, I’m on an African safari with a musket, it’s dark, and I’m afraid the lion is not the one being hunted. Four drummers playing tribal beats amid chants and calls, skewed electronics that all congeal with a strange groove sensibility. Seeing these guys is an experience you won’t want to miss.

HA! And you thought that was it! But no, Fanclub warms you up for the show with the man who once formulated a 13-Point Program to Destroy America,

DJ Name Names a.k.a. Ian Svenonius

Ian’s released over 15 albums in his career, written a successful book , and hosts an awesome show at the Guggenheim. Nation of Ulysses got post-hardcore on its feet, The Make-Up brought Gospel Yeh-Yeh to the world, and Weird War made you snap your fingers. Now Ian is going to make you dance with some turntables.

It all starts at 9 pm (no seriously, 9 PM, really though) at William Keeton House on West Campus. (”where the hell is that?” It’s really easy to find - just walk down the stairs next to Noyes Center and it’s straight ahead.)

5 dollars people. We love you.

Fanclub is hosting a benefit, a fundraiser, a networking event — activism through dance, let’s call it, or, among friends, when destitution and music collide. Yes, the Fanclub could use a little pick-me-up before it hits the floor again. We had to cancel Sightings + Eskimo King, slated for this Saturday, and we want not to suffer that again.

Please join us in merriment, in the spirit of the times. We hope that you will show some support and drop a few in the hat.

11:30PM SIMSTIM (our own SHUJA HAIDER) will drop HOUSE from the Bunker in his headspace. Heads down, eyes up.

1:00AM WEIRD transition of ‘ardcore music

1:30AM DJ FUZZY DUCK invites the entirety of PIXEL to join us in activism. A HUGE supporter of Clean Living, and electro.

It would be unbecoming if we did not throw in a few curveballs. Be aware.

3:30AM Do you really think we are going to call shit?

FRIDAY, MARCH 6th
11:30PM-3:30AM (and beyond?)
$3 (donation…kisses for more)
ALPHA DELT basement (excellent acoustics)
