The Fanclub Collective puts on mostly indie/punk type shows, but we’d like to help support all kinds of music in the local scene. Everyone is welcome to participate in the Fanclub–post a message on the discussion board, sign up to our listserv, come to a meeting, whatever!
The Fanclub Collective was recently praised by Jenny Eliscu in her guidebook: “Schools that Rock: The Rolling Stone College Guide” because “some college students have been working to boost the town’s rock scene. The Cornell-based Fanclub Collective, for instance, formed in 2001 by Chris Adams and Jessica Wolkoff to encourage the development of a stronger indie rock scene in Ithaca. [… T]he Collective worked to bring more obscure acts, and has succeeded in booking bands including Interpol, the Arcade Fire, the Walkmen, Broken Social Scene, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists” (p. 137-139). -Eliscu, Jenny. “Schools that Rock: The Rolling Stone College Guide.” New York: Wenner Media, 2005.
The way we decide on bands is pretty much this: you come to our meetings, propose an idea to the officers and other members, email the band/agent, and find out what the deal is (dates/money, etc). We see if it fits in with other shows people are working on, and then help work out the funding and other details.
Sounds kinda lax, but really, we’re not the Cornell Concert Commission bringing things in for 200 people to vote on. We don’t have much of a division of labor, but we get things done. We put on a lot of shows with not a lot of money.
MEMBERS: please contact an officer BEFORE contacting a band or agent!
