The details!
Hello everyone! I am thrilled to announce that the first Popcorn Youth show of 2009 is right around the corner!
This Tuesday, March 3, Manchester, UK-based psychedelic rock band BEACH FUZZ will play for the first time in Ithaca at the LOST DOG LOUNGE. Syracuse/Ithaca duo AMERICAN SPHINX and Hudson-based musician CYRUS GENGRAS will open. As most of you know, Tuesdays at the Lost Dog are typically Orbiting Art Ensemble nights. Mike Stark and the O.A.E. have graciously allowed me to use use the space, and I think it’s going to be a really special night!
Beach Fuzz is the stripped-down duo of Tom Settle and Nick Mitchell, playing bowed, scraped and intuitively picked lap steel, wailing, echo drenched fuzz synth, percussion and spontaneously composed vocals. Beach Fuzz draws from musicians as disparate as Neil Young, Terry Riley, Sonic Youth, Alice Coltrane, Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan. Beach Fuzz also runs Golden Lab Records, which features intriguing releases from Greg Kelley, Neptune, Heather Leigh Murray, Neil Hagerty’s Howling Hex, among others. They will be fantastic!
American Sphinx features New Thing Productions founder Michael Hentz (guitar, loops, flute, keyboard) with Jarek Miller (drums). Their music combines elements of free jazz, psych and raga drones. They are currently working on a new CD that will be available early 2009, and I’m thrilled to welcome them back to the Popcorn Youth lineup. Cyrus Gengras (of The Antique Brothers) of Hudson, NY, will play a special solo set with acoustic guitar and electronics.
