PCN 2008

Hey everyone!!

My name is Erwin Wang, and, along with Casto Unson, I will be co-directing this year’s Philippine Culture Night. As Christine mentioned, this year’s theme is Alamat at Sayaw (Legends and Dances).

Accordingly, PCN 2008 will touch upon a few traditional Filipino legends, most notably Ibong Adarna. This myth is about a prince, Don Juan, who embarks on a remarkable journey to capture a magical bird in an effort to help his ailing father. This tale and other Filipino legends serve as the backdrop to the central, modern storyline of this year’s PCN, which is about a young man, John, who realizes that the singular aspiration of chasing girls is certainly an immature one.

With regards to the second part of our subtitle, there will - as always - be a wide variety of dances in this year’s show. From our traditional performances of maglalatik, singkil, and tinikling to our modern dances of line-dancing and hip-hop, the many facets of Filipino and Filipino-American culture should be well-represented in PCN 2008. With mock-battles, such as Kali and Sakuting, to romantic pieces, such as Pandanggo sa Ilaw and vocal and musical performances from our Rondalla group, we hope that you will find our show both entertaining and educative.

So it is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to our show on March 8 at 7:00 PM at the Statler Auditorium. Tickets are available at $3 presale from general body members and $5 at the door. All of our members have invested a great amount of time and energy into PCN 2008, and we hope you come out to support our efforts, our group, and our culture.

Best,

Erwin Wang

That’s right, Kamayan is drawing near. This year’s theme is Barrio Fiesta, the equivalent of a Filipino block party, often celebrated for a bountiful harvest or to honor weddings or holidays.

Our Barrio Fiesta is a celebration of Filipino culture, of course involving mouth-watering dishes of the Philippines and traditional dance and musical performances.

Our enticing menu includes lumpia, chicken adobo (national dish of the Philippines!), turon, leche flan…and much more! Vegetarian dishes will be offered as well =)

Kamayan is Sunday, November 11, 2007 6pm-8pm at Willard Straight Memorial Room.

Tickets are $8 presale from any CFA member or from Willard Straight Ticket Office, or $10 at the door. But don’t wait to get your tickets!

Homecoming and our Alumni Initiative

Posted October 9th, 2007 by BJ under News

Kumusta mga kababayan!

I’ve heard that we have a few alumni returning for Homecoming 2007 and that is music to my ears! This a great time for our new faces to greet those who came before. If you are coming for Homecoming please feel welcome to our G-Body meeting on Friday at 5pm. I’d love to catch up with all of you!

On the subject of alumni, our E-board in cooperation with some dedicated alumni, are looking to foster better connections with CFA once our member leave The Hill. We are discussing alumni events, networking opportunities, and the simple pleasures of knowing what’s going on with our beloved Cornell Filipino Association. If you have any thoughts on what you’d like to see or activities you would like to have as alumni, please do not hesitate to email (brs35@cornell.edu) or call me.

On a different note, this past weekend was fall break and presented a time for those staying here to connect with one another. This past Saturday, several undergrads ate dinner together at my house on Stewart Ave and then we drove over to the Apartment of Grad Students, Florio, Dom, and Apol to watch Manny “Pacman” Pacquio defeat Antonio Barrera! A great time (and lots of Lumpia!) was had by everyone in attendance!

That’s all from your CFA advisor, looking forward to (hopefully!) see you this weekend!
