Welcome

Hello and welcome to the Cornell University Chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society! Golden Key International Honour Society is the world’s premier collegiate honor society, with nearly 2 million members and 375 chapters at colleges and universities in eight countries. The Cornell Chapter has been a proud part of Golden Key since the chapter was founded on April 26, 1989.

We have created this website for prospective members looking to learn more about our organization, current members interested in getting involved in our many chapter activities, and Honorary Members hoping to stay apprised of chapter events. The Cornell Chapter of Golden Key serves to recognize scholastic achievement, foster social contacts amongst its members, give back to the community through service activities, and promote career development through academic-related events.

If you have any questions regarding the Cornell Chapter of Golden Key, please do not hesitate to contact us at goldenkey@cornell.edu. Also, we are looking to increase our member participation, so please email us with suggestions for events that pertain to your interests. We look forward to meeting all of you throughout the course of the year!

Announcements

Supporting Kenyan Tribe's Women and Children

Dear Golden Key Members,

One of our fellow members, Rachel Perlman, will be selling Maasai Jewelry (to support the Kenyan tribe's women and children) in Mann Library Lobby on Monday, November 7th from 9am to 4pm. All sales will go back to an organization called Namayiana, which is a cooperative of 100 Maasai tribeswomen. They hand make beautiful, colorful beaded jewelry and sell it to support themselves and their children as a means of gaining autonomy within the male-dominated society. Please visit the following website for more information:http://maasaibeadworks.com/

Golden Key will be providing volunteers for this event. Members will staff the table and sell jewelry to those who walk by, trying to foster interest by explaining what they are selling, where the jewelry comes from, and where the funds are directed. Volunteers will also be in charge of watching the cash box and recording sold items on an inventory list. This will be a laid-back but rewarding experience. Of course, you are also welcome to buy the jewelry yourself if you feel so inclined!

Golden Key members will receive **2 POINTS** for every hour they volunteer. If you would like to participate, please visit the following website to sign-up:

http://www.doodle.com/qedxkyi94fxgaixs

Up to four people can staff the table at a time, with a minimum of two people needed per time slot, so that no one is left manning the table alone. Please sign-up to volunteer by Friday, November 4th. Rachel will email all of the event's volunteers to explain more of the details and to provide a final schedule of when people are volunteering on the 7th.

If you have any questions regarding this service event, please contact Rachel Perlman at rmp83@cornell.edu or VP of Service, Katherine Konvinse at kck49@cornell.edu.

Best Regards,
Golden Key Executive Board

Sunday Session for Into the Streets Volunteers

Hello Golden Key Into the Streets Volunteers,

I recently went to a training session during which I was informed that the Golden Key team will be participating with Light Up Tompkins on October 29th. Light Up Tompkins is Into the Streets' largest service project which aims to aid Tompkins County in achieving their energy efficiency goals, namely decreasing carbon emissions by 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. As volunteers, we will be going door to door helping to hand out over 10,000 bags filled with energy-efficient light bulbs and energy saving tips. In order for this project to be successful and effective, we are required to come to a mandatory training session held by the coordinators of Light Up Tompkins. The session will take place Sunday, October 23rd in the One World room in Anabel Taylor Hall from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. Please arrive on time. ALL members of each team are required to attend. I realize this is not something that you were aware of when you first agreed to volunteer on the 29th. I was not aware of this training session either until very recently, but it is important that we attend as a team. If you do have a conflict with this time please email me ASAP. We will also need to meet for registration at 10am in Barton Hall on Saturday, October 29, the day of the event. As far as I know, this is only a quick check in to make sure that everyone who signed up intends to participate. I’m sure we will all find out more together at the Sunday meeting. If your volunteer time does turn out to be more than originally planned, your points received will be adjusted accordingly. Remember you will receive *2 points per hour* for participating. This could mean you will receive even more points!!

Thank you again for volunteering and be sure to email me at kck49@cornell.edu if you have any problems, questions, conflicts, or concerns.

Kaplan Free Practice Test

Dear Golden Key members,

Kaplan is offering a FREE Practice test for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT. On Saturday, October 1st at 11am, Kaplan is holding a FREE Practice Test for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT.

The event will be more convenient than ever as you’ll be able to take the exam live and online in our Classroom Anywhere environment, available from anywhere you have internet access.

As space is limited, this event does require pre-registration. However, a number of seats have been reserved for Cornell University students. Once registered, you will receive unique log-in information that you will use to enter Kaplan’s state-of-the-art, online classroom and begin the exam. Take the test from home, the library, a coffee shop, or even an open computer lab on campus.

Each test will last up to 4 hours and will be proctored like an actual exam. Students will receive their score immediately following the exam. After the test, one of our expert instructors will give a short workshop on test-taking strategies and will answer any questions that you may have.

This is a great opportunity for you to see how you might score on the real thing, and also to become familiar with the kinds of questions that will be on the real test. For most students, this exam will be a more realistic test-taking experience as you can practice in the format that mirrors nearly all graduate school exams.

To register for this free event, fill out the following web form:
www.formstack.com . For additional information, visit www.kaptest.com/practice or call one of Kaplan’s test experts at 1-800-KAP-TEST. Before the event, we will send you an e-mail confirming your registration and providing you with instructions for checking in on Saturday morning. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in going to Graduate school in the next few years.

Sincerely,
The Golden Key Executive Board
