Operation Christmas Child

Our chapter will be participating in an international service initiative called Operation Christmas Child. This service initiative involves gift-wrapping shoe boxes and packing them with gifts and useful daily items for young children living in third world countries. Our chapter has budgeted money to purchase supplies and gifts for two shoe boxes (one for a girl and one for a boy). On Friday November 13th, we will be driving to the mall to purchase gifts/supplies and then packaging/decorating the shoe boxes and writing letters to the two children the gifts will be shipped to. This service event is open to the first 8 to 9 members who reply back ( you will receive a confirmation shortly after). If you are interested, please email Caleb at cjc263@cornell.edu by 12PM on Thursday. Please also indicate if you have a car and are willing to help in driving for an extra point. This event will take place from 3:15 to 5:45PM. You will be awarded a total of *5 Points* for participating.

Expand Your Horizons

On April 25th, there will be an Expand Your Horizons Conference held on
Cornell's campus. The conference is for middle-school girls to learn more
about science and potential careers in this field. It's a great program
for girls living in the state and really fun to help out with!

There are two ways you can get involved with this to earn service points:

1) General Volunteer:
You can sign up for a three-hour shift during the day, which runs from
8:30 am to 5:00 pm. To sign up, you'll need to email Ellen Keene
ek237@cornell.edu and set up a time with her ASAP. Please let Ellen know
that you're from Golden Key, and please CC Michelle (mjs285) on the
e-mail.

General volunteers do miscellaneous type jobs to help the conference run
smoothly such as giving directions, helping out with registration, running
science demos, helping out with meals (which you'll get to partake in).
You will get *2 POINTS* for every hour you help out (up to 6 points).

2) Being a Buddy:
This is ONLY open to women. Basically, you spend the day escorting a
young girl to the workshops she will participate in (and you get to
participate with her)! Some girls come with their parents, but buddies
are there for the girls whose parents can't come. The different workshops
include everything from making ice cream at the dairy bar to sticking your
hand into the stomach of the "holy" cow! You will get *8 POINTS* for the
whole day (8am-5pm).

Please email Katie Sullivan (kjs237@cornell.edu) ASAP if you want to be a
buddy. Please let Katie know that you're from Golden Key, and please CC
Michelle (mjs285) on the email.

Description: PALS is an organization that is currently run by one of our Honorary Members, Cindy van Es. PALS (Partnership between African and Lansing Schools) is hoping to raise about $6,500 for a water tank system for Mbaka Oromo Primary School in western Kenya. Right now, there is one water spigot that brings water from a nearby stream. It doesn't work during the dry months, so for most of the year, there's no fresh water to drink during the day. The water tank system collects rain water run-off from the roofs of classrooms and stores it in a sealed tank, where they can use it when needed. It would be a huge improvement in the quality of life for the kids and teachers! Both Honorary and Undergraduate members are invited to attend. The event will be a large Carnival with games for kids as well as a barbecue. Golden Key will be running its own table during the event.
We are looking for 15 people to work either Shift 1 and/or Shift 2. If you are interested, please e-mail Brett Goldstein (BG83) by Sunday (4/20) with your full name and mobile telephone number. Also include whether you will be able to drive to the event.
You will receive TWO POINTS per hour for attending this service event!
Drivers will receive an additional ONE POINT!
