Cornell Hapa - Constitution
Article I: Name
The name of this organization is "Cornell Hapa".
Article II: Purpose
The purpose of this organization shall be:
- to celebrate and share the experience of people of mixed race,
- to create a forum on campus for discussion of the experience of people of mixed race,
- to promulgate our ideas and experiences in the wider community through a series of events and publications,
- to foster a multiethnic community that is not mutually exclusive from other ethnic communities and can act as a voice for multiethnic people in society,
- to accordingly promote friendship and unity among its members as well as with other organizations and entities, and
- to challenge existing rigid notions of race and tendencies to categorize using only these notions.
Article III: Membership
Any member of the Cornell community (student, staff, or faculty) with an
interest in Hapa and mixed-race issues shall be eligible for membership in
this organization. Members are required to pay membership dues, the
exact amount of which shall be set by the Executive Board at the beginning
of each semester. An "active member" is here defined as a member who has attended at least one meeting/event in the past semester.
Article IV: Officers
This organization shall have an Executive Board consisting of the following
elected officers:
- The President makes sure that the entire club runs smoothly and decides the direction of the organization.
- The Treasurer takes care of the financial responsibilities of the organization.
- The Secretary is responsible for taking notes of the meetings, sending out information to the members, maintaining membership information, and assorted issues dealing with documents of the organization.
- The Public Relation/Publicity Chair is responsible for publicity, i.e., promoting the club's events.
- The Social Chair runs social events and takes care of the social network within the organization.
- The Liaison is in charge of the organization's relationships with other clubs.
- The Historian documents the group's history and events through photographs and other means.
- The Editor serves as editor-in-chief for the group's literary magazine.
Any member may be eligible to run for a position as officer. Elections
shall be held at the close of the spring semester for a one-year term. Two
members may elect to hold one position if they feel the position requires
more effort than one can handle, or if they want to split the effort between
them. The candidate with the most votes shall assume elected office
immediately following the election.
Article V: Meetings
Meetings shall be held when at least two of the four members of the Executive
Board decide to hold one. Any member of this organization may propose
that a meeting be held. A quorum at a meeting shall consist of at least
two members of the Executive Board and fifty percent of the active members.
Resolutions shall be carried by a majority of Executive Board and active members present. The Executive Board may be overridden
by three-fourths majority vote of active members present.
Article VI: Amendments
A motion for amendment of this Constitution may be considered with the approval
of a simple majority of all registered members. A period of at least
one week shall be allotted between the approval of the motion for amendment
and the voting on the proposed amendment. Amendments to the Constitution
may be carried only with the approval of two-thirds of all members.
