ITHACA
Ithaca is a small city in the heart of New York's Finger Lakes region, surrounded by beautiful lakes, waterfalls, rolling hills, farmland, vineyards, and state parks. Cornell campus, located in Ithaca, is one of the most attractive in the U.S.

Getting to US:
Required: Visa (F-1 or J-1), Visa documents (I-20, DS-2019, I-94). As of the beginning of January 2004, US has started taking pictures and electronic fingerprints upon arrival at the airports. Check the Cornell International Students and Scholars Office for more details.

Getting to Ithaca and Cornell:

  • By bus: We recommend Shortline. Prices about $40 one-way. About 5 hours from New York City. Check Shortline or Greyhound for schedules.
  • By plane: Flying directly into Ithaca. Airlines at the Ithaca Airport: US Airways and Northwest Airlines. Check FlyIthaca for more details and flight deals.
  • Check VisitIthaca for more information about travelling to Ithaca.
  • Check the Cornell Website for travel directions by airplane, bus, car or taxi.

    Accommodation:
    Rents range between $250 - $1350, typically around $450 per person for two-bedroom, $700 for one-bedroom appartment. Relatively easy to find, but arranging 3-4 months in advance a good idea. Check CU Info for On-campus and Off-campus housing.

    Transportation:
    The local bus service is TCAT. Currently the fare is $1.50 per ride which is very high. Buying a bus pass for frequent users is recommended.

  • LIVING IN ITHACA
    The Finger Lakes region of central New York is renowned for natural beauty with spectacular gorges and waterfalls that bracket the campus. Three state parks are within 10 miles. Popular outdoor activities include sailing, wind surfing, swimming, skiing, hiking, and picnicking.

    The city of Ithaca has a population close to 50,000. There is a surprising array of bookshops, movie houses, specialty stores, nightspots, and restaurants, including many with ethnic cuisine.

    Ithaca's international population is quite varied, with international students from 120 countries representing 15 percent of Cornell's enrollment. The city of Syracuse, the Finger Lakes wine district, the Watkins Glen auto racing circuit, and several centers for the performing arts are all within an hour's drive. New York City and Toronto are less than five hours away.
