Genre: Romance / Drama
Directed by: Theo Angelopoulos (2004)
Music by: Eleni Karaindrou
Plot Summary: The best director in the world whose films you have never seen is the
Greek master Theo Angelopoulos, whose stunningly composed shots and mythically
embellished narratives evoke the modern history of Greece through the kinds of emotions,
conflicts, and perverse dynamics we associate with classic Athenian tragedies.
The Weeping Meadow, in its own stately and very different style, turns an exotic past into
jaw-dropping spectacle, beginning in 1919 with the arrival somewhere near Thessaloniki
of a horde of refugees from Odessa. Among these people are two small kids, Alexis and Eleni.
Eleni is an orphan and she is also taken care by Alexis' family. The refugees build a small
village somewhere near a river and we watch as the kids grow up and fall in love. But
difficult times of dictatorship and war are coming...
The Village Voice
calls the movie "Homeric filmmaking, uniquely worthy of the term," and even TV Guide
allows "you'd be forgiven for thinking you're watching the most beautiful movie ever
made."
