Exco Board Candidates
Ronald Li
Applying Position: President
Class: 2010
Hey! I’m Ronald and I was one of HKSA’s Event Coordinators this past year. Being a member of the E-board has been incredibly fun and has been a learning experience; that is why I am looking to expand my responsibilities and run for President. I believe the main qualities a President needs are experience, the ability to work on a team, and dedication. Over the last year, I have had to deal with the planning part of events, act as a liaison for Cornell HKSA when working with other clubs, and deal with any difficulties that may occur during an event. These are all things the President needs to worry about and this experience I had working as Event Coordinator will make it easier for me to transition to the role of President. Outside of HKSA, I was also involved in student government and the basketball team in high school, so I have had extensive experience working in a team-orientated environment. Lastly, I am willing to put in long hours to ensure the success of HKSA. I hope you all got to know me a bit better! See you on Election day!
Michelle Lee
Applying Position: President
Class: 2010
My name is Michelle Lee and I am running for HKSA President. I am the acting Secretary in the current administration and my main responsibilities this year were recording minutes during meetings, as well as reserving event venues, among all things. Aside from these seemingly trivial tasks, I actually played a crucial, albeit behind-the-scenes, role in HKSA by helping out with pretty much everything, from event logistics to playwriting, from designated driver to fake tree. I really strive to represent HKSA in all forms possible.
As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “a leader is a dealer in hope,” and hope is what I bring to this organization. I will define and refine HKSA’s direction through soliciting everyone’s input. I will band together an exciting group of dedicated executive board members to work for you. I will continue to promote our culture across the campus until every last person admires the quality of our hard work and commitment. Simply put, if you vote for me, I will make our HKSA ascend into greatness, if you do not believe that it is there already.
Erica Loh
Applying Position: Treasurer
Class: 2010
I believe that I serve as a perfect candidate for the treasurer position. During high school I dedicated all four years to a fund-raising organization: Z club, our mission was to raise money and donate the amount to charity organizations that needed it most. Through those four years I have taken part as a public relations leader and as vice president; I have dealt with events that required company sponsorships and donations from families. This has provided me with sufficient experience to understand the responsibilities and duties of a treasurer. I am very creative and even if I am not to be elected, I would like to share with you some ideas that I have to raise funds for HKSA. Similar to that of “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”, how about “Stick the Asian Glow on the Asian”? Or we can have an instant noodle sale during the winter. We’ll have hot water ready, maybe boiled eggs/spam, and people can have instant noodles for lunch within 5 minutes. Although I haven’t been active in fund-raising activities for a period of time, I believe that through my past and daily experiences, such as shopping, I can be an asset towards HKSA’s balance sheet.
Stephanie Chan
Applying Position: Secretary
Class: 2010
Hi. I am Stephanie Chan, and I am running for secretary position of HKSA. Coming from a high school with merely 4 people from Hong Kong, I have really came to appreciate the “Hong Kong” bonding that I get from being a part of this HKSA since freshman year. Being part of HKSA has been fun and rewarding, and in my junior year I hope to give back to the club by serving on the board. I believe I am qualified for a position on the HKSA ExcoBoard, as I recognize that my duty as a secretary does not end with merely booking rooms and taking minutes. In HKSA, each exco’s responsibility extends well into other exco’s area of job, and I believe my experience in various areas will make me a good secretary, as well as serve the HKSA team better as a whole. I will speak more about my qualifications as a secretary and what I will bring to the team as a member of the HKSA ExcoBoard on Friday. Look forward to seeing you there.
Vivien Cheung
Applying Position: Event Coordinator
Class: 2011
Hello. My name is Vivien and I am an economics major in Arts and Sciences. I would like to serve as an event coordinator in HKSA to assist board members in holding various events throughout the year. After a semester of experience as a New Student Representative, I have familiarized myself with the operations of the association and was able to be part of event coordination. Working for this year’s cultural show has been especially fulfilling; not only have I had a chance to build a strong relationship with our fellow members, the process itself was indescribably rewarding. I hope to contribute to the collective effort and continue our successful tradition. Apart from keeping up with our annual activities, it is vital to add new events to promote cultural assimilation on campus, on top of strengthening the bond within the Hong Kong students’ community. Through CAPSU, for example, we can co-organize larger-scale events with other associations. I would like to introduce activities to help new students become acquainted with Cornell, and others such as shopping trips and fundraising sales. During breaks throughout the school year, I will be available to help coordinate events in Hong Kong as well. In addition, I highly value teamwork, a quality that I grew to appreciate even more through HKSA. Thank you for your support and I look forward to collaborating with all of you!
James Mak
Applying Position: Event Coordinator
Class: 2011
Hi! I am James Mak, a pre-dental student majoring in Policy Analysis and Management at the College of HE. I am an adventurous and passionate person who balances life with both work and play. I am currently working as a creative assistant for Zuni Icosahedron, a renowned Avant-garde drama production team from Hong Kong for Spring 2008. Having served as one of the New Student Representatives in Fall 2007, I have further consolidated my collaborative abilities and teamwork skills by organizing the HKSA/SSA Pool Tournament, the Cornell Hong Kong Winter Gathering and helping out at the Asian Dragons Night. I have always been taking up responsibilities dated when I was studying in Hong Kong and Scotland. I have served as the Treasurer and Vice Chairman for the Soccer Club and Table Tennis Club at St Paul’s Co-educational College. In summer 2005 and 2006, my friends and I organized two secondary school varieties shows “The Summer Varieties Show 2005” and “The Summersault 2006” which were held at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre. Recently, I have been given the opportunity to be the Rehearsal Master for Zuni’s two latest drama productions “Hua-yen Sutra” and “1587, A Year of No Significance”. I believe that the skills I have developed to master the multimedia platforms will contribute a great deal to the future of C-Show drama production and movie making. I enjoy working for HKSA so much that I cannot wait to join the HKSA executive board once again. Thank you for your support!
Johnson Cheng
Applying Position: Event Coordinator
Class: 2009
I enjoy so much for being the new student representative this semester for HKSA. Although I have only served on the Executive Committee Board for half a year, my experience was invaluable. Being a part of this family not only enhanced my network, but also gave me the chance to contribute positively to the Hong Kong community at Cornell. I appreciate what HKSA gave me and I will always value the memories that we had during Spring 2008. For this coming school year, I would love to serve as the event coordinator for HKSA and continue to work with all the wonderful people while expressing my passion in all the exciting events that HKSA is going to coordinate.
Ivan Au
Applying Position: Publicity Chair
Class: 2011
I hope you guys enjoyed the poster/movie tickets for the HKSA Cultural Show! With the immense course load at Cornell, I absolutely enjoy spending time on Photoshop and Illustrator on the side to relax, and I am proud to have contributed my efforts in collaboration with both our new student representatives in the most recent cultural show. I’m open to any new ideas and suggestions and am an ultimate perfectionist when it comes to details in designs. Additionally, having spent most of my life in Hong Kong, I hope that I can benefit HKSA with my skills and interests through the role of the publicity chair in the upcoming year!
David Lin
Applying Position: IT Chair
Class: 2011
My name is David Lin and I’m proud to run for your next semester’s HKSA IT chair. It’s always been a joy for me to read up on upcoming news on HKSA, but I’d rather gather it all and give it to you in a neat package. In fact, just reading this site and my bio is enough to tell me that you’re all informed and active participants in HKSA, so I’d like to let you in on my master scheme if you elect me as IT Chair next year. Keeping with the work previous chairs have done, I plan to keep everyone in tabs with our news and help you guys with everything IT related, from relevant announcements you would like to put up to helping out with cultural show videos and editing. In addition, an addition to the website includes the Weekly Hong Kong News section for your convenience. It’d be my pleasure to coordinate the club’s technology in the new generation while working with everyone on the ExCo Board for another successful year in the face of Cornell, representing Hong Kong!
