Cornell HKSA

Candidate 1 – Carrie Tse

Year: 2011
Major: Geology
Profile: Hi, My name is Carrie Tse and I am strongly interested in becoming a HKSA student representative. I am a new transfer student (Junior) majoring in Geology. I was born in Hong Kong and had immigrated to California when I was eight. Even though I grew up in California, I am a true HKer at heart. I embrace the fast-pace, exhilarating culture and lifestyle of HongKongers. Everything about Hong Kong excites me, everything from the successful world-trading markets to the awesome food of street vendors. With my knowledge of Hong Kong and its culture, I believe I will make a competent student representative for HKSA

Candidate 2 – Gloria Chan

Year: 2013
Major: Undecided
Profile: I care about all of you and would love to contribute to our HKSA by giving you 125% of myself. I really enjoy creating events. One of my ideas for an HKSA activity would be a semi-formal masquerade ball. Partying in Hong Kong? I will bring you LEGIT Cornell parties during breaks and make money for HKSA. I already have some themes in mind, such as "Avant Garde & High Fashion" and "Nocturnal Carnival at Volar". Before I became a Cornell student, I got my friends to buy more than 35 tickets for a HK Cornell party once. For past experience, I was both the Weekend Activities Officer and the Weekend Student Services Officer at my high school. Also, I was the Choir President, the Cheerleading Team Captain and a Statesman Journal All-Star. You can check out the newspaper article here: http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20090128/ITK/901280442. Vote for me, and I will selflessly and whole-heartedly work towards your happiness. It would be my honor to service you.

Candidate 3 – Howard Yu

Year: 2013
Major: Operations and Research Engineering
Profile: I am a freshman who is aiming to major in operations research in the College of Engineering. I am interested in becoming a New Student Representative of the HKSA because I am eager to gain additional leadership and organizational experience. I acknowledge that some of the responsibilities will involve organizing HKSA events such as weekend gatherings, food festivals, performances, and more, and I am ready to dedicate my effort and time to facilitating this for HKSA. Becoming a New Student Representative will also require teamwork as well for cooperating with the rest of the HKSA committee members. I believe that the leadership and teamwork skills I gained while being involved in a student-run company, teaching as volunteering service, model united nations, and summer internships during my years in high school would be indispensable for my involvement with the HKSA. I look forward to this worthwhile experience and am ready to work with you all.

Candidate 4 – Michelle Kwan

Year: 2012
Major: Communications
Profile: Hi! My name is Michelle Kwan. I am a sophomore majoring in Communication. HKSA is a big family to me. Their heart-warming welcome eased my anxiety as a transfer student, and I feel blessed to be one of the family members. I have had a lot of administrative experiences such as club's President and Vice-President, event's PIC. For the last two years, I was the producer of the graduation show for a Children Summer Camp. All these experiences have equipped me with excellent leadership and events-organizing skills. I am responsible and outgoing. These are the qualities that a student representative should possess. By devoting my time and effort, I am sure I can lessen the workload of the current Eboard members' and enhance HKSA's operation with my creativeness. So much I want to help raising the family since we are all one big family. I will contribute new ideas in organizing activities, hoping to attract and welcome more new Hong Kong members as well as members from different cultures on campus. I'm looking forward to serving you all. Thanks!

Candidate 5 – Patricia Chung

Year: 2011
Major: Policy Analysis and Management
Profile: We spend a part of our student lives, meeting new faces and adjusting to different communities. For a large part of my student life, I worked with migrant children, former prostitutes and taught them Taekwondo and English. I was a head coach, a treasurer and still am a sister to a lot of people. As a transfer student, I have been through the transitions of freshman and sophomore years and my student life is like huge collage of people and experiences. I am responsible, resourceful and I get things done. Working with other Hong Kong people would be my honor because, I love the food, the culture and especially egg tarts! =)

Candidate 6 – Warren Lau

Year: 2013
Major: Operations and Research Engineering
Profile:A huge part of my life has been about serving others. Whether it is being a house captain at my previous boarding school, a sergeant at the pipes and drums, a delegate at national and international leadership conferences, or a volunteer working in rural parts of China, I seek to make the life of others better in my community and beyond. Cornell is going to be no different. Over the past several weekends, I have been fortunate enough to experience the HKSA events and their warm hospitality. I feel that having taken so much from this group, running for the freshman representative is the best way to give back. I believe that I possess many qualities that would make me an excellent representative including perseverance, reliability, competence, confidence, integrity, trustworthiness, and above all a natural passion to serve others. I sincerely hope to be given an opportunity to serve as the new student representative and to bring more exciting elements into the group.

Candidate 7 – Zoe Wong

Year: 2013
Major: China and Asia Pacific Studies (CAPS)
Profile: I am interested in becoming a New Student Rep this year. I believe that my organizational skills, proven ability to 'get the job done' and passion for HKSA make me a good candidate for the position. I have experience in several key leadership roles from high school, notably as editor of my yearbook, vice president of my student union, chairperson of my school's annual fundraising trek, and house sports captain. These roles have taught me many things but more importantly about teamwork and patience. I am always up for a challenge, and I hope that I'll be able to bring new ideas to the table. Aside from the serious stuff, I am a believer in the "work hard, play hard" mentality. I hope to contribute in providing HKSA members with somewhere fun they can retreat to in between papers and prelims, as well as somewhere they can feel at home. Because HK is so far away, HKSA is pretty much 'home' to many of us here. Overall, I feel being on the HKSA E-board will allow me to not only take away invaluable experience, but also establish some great long-lasting friendships. P.S. I'm hoping the fact I don't speak much Canto won't play a part in my candidacy... either way Canto 101 is on my list so don't worry, I'll get better!
