WHY STOP AT 'CLIMATE NEUTRAL'?

Beyond Kyoto is the most recent initiative of KyotoNOW! that seeks to move the campus towards further emission reductions by targeting projects and initiatives in three areas: efficiency, renewables and transportation. On the efficiency side, Cornell has already made great strides to cut energy use and ensure that we are using energy in the most efficient manner possible.

Still more could be done, and implementing programs that mandate the purchase of EnergyStar appliances is just one more thing that Cornell should consider. With respect to renewables, myriad opportunities exist for utilizing energy sources that are clean and sustainable. From solar panel installations on campus and behind-the-meter wind projects to biomass co-firing and acquisition of renewables from the grid, Cornell can significantly cut global warming pollution by increasing its reliance on renewable energy.

Pursuing a strategy such as this will result in economic benefits as well, as the price for fossil fuels continue to rise. Concerning transportation, Cornell could explore ways to reduce fuel consumption by greening the campus fleet and promoting alternative modes of transportation beyond what it has already done.

Ultimately, the goal of the Beyond Kyoto initiative is to make the Cornell campus climate neutral over the long term. This is in line with Cornell’s commitment to sustainability and what must be done in order to mitigate the harmful economic, environmental and public health impacts of global warming. KyotoNOW! asks that the administration work with us on this Beyond Kyoto initiative and renew its commitment to stopping global warming.
