SALSASON Latin Dance Night at Big Red Barn

The term “¡pa’lante!,” shorthand for “para adelante” (which translates in English as “move forward!”), has long been used as a call to action in protest and solidarity movements throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The mantra of the Young Lords and Puerto Rican social justice movement – “Pa’lante siempre pa’lante!” – is a prominent example of this usage. The term is also frequently employed in popular Latin music.

Proyecto ¡Pa’lante! promotes some of the most exciting Latin and world music nightlife happenings at Cornell and in the greater Ithaca and Central New York areas within the context of the overall Pa’lante undertaking. We engage nightlife culture not as a distraction and antithesis to the daily grind and repression of capitalist daylife and ascetic cultural norms, but as integral to a holistic social endeavor that extols cooperation, connection and sensuality as cornerstones of a new society, providing a clear alternative to mainstream cultural production and its drive toward commercial monopoly, gender, racial and sexual categorization, and the destruction of artistic diversity. Through our productions we attempt to bring you a total experience of high-energy Latin and world dance and music, replete with strong bass, melodious vocals and scintillating instrumental arrangement, in a collective and non-pretentious atmosphere open to and enjoyed by everybody. We also hold many of our events as community benefits and mobilizers and in so doing highlight the oneness of collectively created pleasure and social justice.
