Beginner Salsa - for all new registrants
In Beginner Salsa you will learn the essentials of Salsa and Latin dancing: feeling and
interpretation of rhythms, and basic step and partner turn patterns with variations. Class
begins with a 15 minute warm up to Salsa Suelta (Salsaerobics) and then moves into step and
turn patterns, with emphasis on connection in lead-and-follow. In one month you will acquire
the technique and confidence necessary to enjoy Latin social dance and move to the next level.
No partner necessary, couple sign-up encouraged.
Bachata has emerged in recent years as an increasingly popular Latin social and nightclub dance. Bachata derives from different influences than Salsa, though there is some overlap. To dance Bachata, as in Salsa, the student must recognize a 4/4 measure. But the tempo is slower in Bachata and different instrumental arrangements make for a very distinctly sensual feel. Like Salsa, Bachata works off of a three step timing and develops a dynamic lead-follow connection. Learning Bachata steps and motion adds a great dance to your repertoire. It also imbues your dancing as a whole with that extra something - Latin motion, feeling and "sabor" - making you a more complete and communicative dancer. |

Intermediate Salsa - registration with permission only
Intermediate Salsa I introduces more complex open step patterns ("shines") and partner turn
combinations. Class begins with Salsa Suelta warm up and then moves into partner work.
As students progress in dance technique and repertoire, increasing emphasis is placed
on style and coordination of dance movement with music flow. No partner necessary,
couple sign-up |

Cuban Line-Dance "Comparsa"
Comparsa is a percussion and dance tradition of Cuban Carnival. It is performed in lines and as a large group on street level, with participants moving forward and forming different configurations while dancing. The basic steps are 1, 2, 3 plus a tap and 1, 2, 3 plus a fast combination 1, 2 out of beat. In Comparsa there are only leaders and followers without gender reference. Anybody can learn and have a great time with this dance. No partner or dance experience necessary. |
