About the Team
The Cornell University Sailing Team is a competitive club team composed of life-long sailors as well as newcomers to the sport. One thing all teammates share is a commitment to continuous improvement and a love for competition. The team is a member of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America (ICSA) and the Middle Atlantic Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (MAISA).
MAISA is one of the toughest conferences in the United States, which is great for Cornell since it provides us with excellent competition. Because of our geographic location we can easily send teams to out of conference events as well. The team travels to New England, the South East, and the Mid West on a regular basis. First established by the University in 1935, the team is one of the oldest student organizations at Cornell, as well as being one of the oldest college sailing teams.
Over the team's 70+ year history it has earned the respect of many in the college sailing community, has managed to win some of the most prestigious trophies in college sailing, and seen several team members inducted into the College Sailing Hall of Fame.
Our Fleet of Boats
The team primarily utilizes a fleet of 18 Club 420s, which were purchased new in 2003. Additionally, the team has a fleet of 10 older 420s, 4 lasers, two J-24s and a host of other small keel boats. For running practices and regattas, the team has 3 Boston Whalers, each recently refurbished.
Where We Sail
The team practices and hosts regattas on the southern end of Cayuga Lake, a short three minute drive from campus. The lake is longest of New York's famed Finger Lakes at 38.2 miles. Additionally, its maximum depth of 435 feet makes it the second deepest of the Finger Lakes.
Our boathouse is situated on the East shore only a half mile from the southern end. The current boathouse is an A-frame structure which has a meeting room, individual lockers, and a repair bench. It is the home of our boats during the winter months. However, it is in the process of being replaced by the Merrill Family Sailing Center. Construction of this new facility will be completed by Fall 2008.
When We Sail
The team, like most college sailing teams, has both a fall and spring season. In the fall we sail from the start of school to early November. The spring season usually begins in March and runs through May. Practices are held Monday through Thursday in the afternoons and multiple regattas occur most weekends all across the region.
