ICSA National Semi-Finals: 13th of 18

The team traveled to the highly anticipated Coed National Semi-Finals over the weekend to compete for a chance to head to the Final in Texas.  Teams from all over the country, 36 total, came to compete in the two event regatta where 18 teams would be in the West and 18 in the East.  The top 9 teams from the West and the East would move onto the finals.  Being an eastern school doesn't mean we compete in the East bracket, the names are simply to decipher the two events.  Cornell actually ended up in the West based on our finish at the conference championship.

We traveled to the US Naval Academy on Friday afternoon with 7 sailors, Philip Ally '12, Martha Peterson '12, Devon Furlong '13, Della Bradt '13, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Greg Reppucci '15, and Duncan Howes '15.  Racing would begin around 10AM on Saturday with a light southerly breeze around 4-6mph off of Triton light.  It was typical Annapolis conditions, light breeze, hot sun, and many power boats kicking up a washing machine like chop across the bay.  We started off hot and the team sat as high as 5th place early on with a win in race 3A.  An unfortunate DSQ dampened the spirits for a moment, but it was short lived and we finished the day sitting in 11th place, but a fair amount out of 9th, 25 points.  Not out of it, but we needed to improve for tomorrows racing in order to advance.

On Sunday the breeze started off slightly to the right of the previous day with winds out of the WSW around 5-10mph and little chop to speak of, however, more fluky breeze.  Again we started off just fine hanging on to our position but not really gaining, we needed a spark to jump in the standings.  The breeze shifted back to the Southerly and increased in velocity to around 15mph and we made some crew switches.  The conditions were tough for our team, and we couldn't find that other gear to get to the front of the pack.  While we managed some good finishes, our deficits were simply too much to overcome.

Sailing in the A division was Skipper Philip Alley '12, with crews Lindsey Ludwig '14 and Martha Peterson '12, while in the B Division was Skipper Duncan Howes '15, with crews Devon Furlong '13, Della Bradt '13, and Greg Reppucci '15.

We can say with confidence that we gave it our all down in Annapolis, and left with a strong feeling of a successful season.  We will look forward to next year and another push for the Coed National scene.

In the meantime we will strive to finish strong at the Women's event in Texas in two weeks and see what we can accomplish in the FJ's down there.

Special thank you to the Bradt Family for housing the team over the weekend yet again.  And also to the Alley Family, and our alumni for coming out to support the team and cheer us on.

MAISA Women's Dinghy Championship: 4th of 12

Cornell Women's sailors traveled to Old Dominion over the weekend to compete in the MAISA Women's Conference Championship. Twelve teams from around MAISA came to compete for a chance to head to the National Championship in Texas beginning on May 30th.

We got off to a rocky start and struggled to finish in the top group during the first couple of races, but that certainly did not last long. In B division Lauren Turner '13 and Devon Furlong '13 found their stride and rolled off five top 3 finishes in a row, winning two of those races to end the day on Saturday while Jenny Borshoff '15 and Della Bradt '13 held their own and pulled out some top 3's in the A division. With a 12 boat fleet the room for error is simply non-existent and you need to stay focused to keep your mistakes to a minimum. At the end of Saturday the team was sitting in 4th place just a few points out of 3rd and comfortably in a qualifying position.

Sunday was supposed to bring some big breeze, however it didn't show up in the morning, and racing got underway in a light Northerly. B division would start the day with Lauren and Devon headed out for racing. They picked up right where they left off and finished with a 2 in the first race. With seemingly everything in the bag for the event, they headed upwind in the second race of the set comfortably in 3rd place until the wheels came off, or Lauren. Lauren fell out of the boat slipping out of the straps leaving Devon to wonder what had just happened. The boat flipped over and they quickly fell to last place around the windward mark. Picking up a few boats would prove to be key, but the stressed feeling set in, and we needed to make sure that didn't affect our remaining races.

Jenny and Della headed out for the final two A races and suffered a questionable DSQ in the first of the two, but a DSQ nonetheless. In the second race they were over early and recorded an 8. With those three races all coming together at the same time we were left with two for the end of the event and it was important to make sure we finished well. Lauren and Devon headed back out and were over in the first race, great! However, they were not fazed and managed to come back to 8th by the weather mark and have a stellar run to finish at the favored end and take a 5th after rounding an end. This finish would be the one we needed going into the last race. They took a 5th in the final race and we went on to finish in the best spot we could have, 4th for the event.

We have a lot to do at practice preparing for our upcoming championship in Texas, but we are excited to say that we feel our mishaps were some decisions we can correct next time, and our speed was not the factor holding us back. If you are reading this now, then you will hopefully also follow the team through our post-season run.

Special thank you to the Borshoff extended family for supporting the team over the weekend with food and lodging.

Greater New York Dinghy Regatta: 9th of 14

This weekend four Cornell sailors traveled to the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta co-hosted by Fordham and Columbia on City Island in the Bronx, NY. On Saturday morning, the sailors were greeted by warm weather and a light wind speed of 5 to 6 mph. By 3pm, the wind speed had picked up significantly to a steady 18 mph. Many boats floundered in the heavy breeze, which showed that maintaining boat speed through the waves was key. The last race was started at 5pm, for a total of 8 races completed. On Sunday, the sailors encountered heavy rain and cold conditions, with the wind speed shifting between 6 and 12 mph. The conditions on both days made racing challenging for the sailors, but through it all the team took advantage of the opportunity to sail against other challenging teams and learned a lot. Skipper Alex Gatto ’15 and crew Becca Macies ’14 sailed in A division, while skipper Collin Clark ’14 and crew Sonia Guior ’14 sailed in division B. The team finished 9th overall.

A special thank you to the Macies family for hosting the team out of Irvington, New York!

The Thompson Trophy: 16th of 18

Philip Alley '12 and Lindsey Ludwig '14 sailing downwind in boat 4 at the Thompson Trophy.

The Cornell sailors arrived Saturday morning to light winds and fog on the Thames River at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Racing began at 10:15am in a 5-7knt southerly with A division in FJ's and B division in 420s. The fog soon burned off leaving beautiful blue skies for the majority of the day with the breeze increasing to 7-10knts and a consistent right trend. Despite the long courses, both divisions were extremely tight with several boat lengths being the difference between 3rd and 12th around the first windward mark. Cornell saw a lot of up and down results throughout the day. Going into Sunday, Cornell was low in the standings but still in striking distance to the next five teams with six races left in the event. Conditions were a complete flip from those on day one of the event. The wind had switched to a 8-12knt northerly bringing a steady rain, and with the current piping up to full force the left side was hugely favored. The fleets fought aggressively for the pin end and lanes to drive left. Cornell joined the fray and posted a string of good finishes in the end to boost themselves up a spot in the final standings. Sailing the event were Philip Alley '12 and Lindsey Ludwig '14 in A division, Zander Liem '15 and Juliet Levine '14 in B division, and Greg Reppucci '15 as heavy crew/ team photographer/ team Dad.

Huge thanks to the Reppucci family for hosting the team in their Charlestown, RI home!

April 14 - 15

The America Trophy: 8th of 18

The sailors of MAISA know the fleet race championship regatta as "The America Trophy". The event hosts 18 teams who qualified out of their region within MAISA. Cornell won their qualifying event on March 31-April 1 at home out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center and earned the right to represent the team at Hobart and William Smith Colleges over this past weekend, April 14-15. The top 8 schools at the America Trophy would advance to the ICSA Coed National Semi-Finals hosted by USNA on May 12-13.

The week of practice leading up to the event could not have been better with the team on the water Tuesday-Friday and breeze up around 15+ each day. On Wednesday HWS sent 6 boats down to Cornell to help the team get some better competition on the water, and on Friday Columbia joined us with 4 boats. All in all the team was ready for the championship with high hopes of getting back to the National scene for the second time in as many years. The forecast for the weekend looked beautiful with breeze out of the south anywhere from 15-20 both days. We prepared specifically to have crews of all sizes ready to go for any condition, but we were looking forward to the breeze. As we know happens all too often in sailing, the forecast was dead wrong and racing would be few and far between on Saturday. Only 4 A races and 2 B races were held on Saturday with long wind delays throughout the day. The team sat in 7th in the minimal racing held on Saturday.

Sunday still had high hopes for the breeze to come, however it never did, at least not to the extent we would hope. We arrived to an earlier report time on Sunday due to the lack of racing the previous day, and racing got underway at 8:50am. It was a tough start for the Big Red with double digit finishes across the board and it seemed as if the hope of qualifying was slowly slipping away. The conditions were "light and lumpy" as we call it, with winds out of the South around 4-8 and a bit of chop to deal with. Early mistakes would destroy your race and it was certainly disrupting the Cornell flow. Slow and steady we were barely hanging on anywhere from 9th -12th place throughout the day, until something kicked in. Our goal for the day was to leave the event feeling that we did everything we could to do our best, and not specifically on the water, but on land due to the long breaks and slow racing. Staying focused would be a key to our success. With just two races to go in each division we were down 15 points, and needed something to happen. Senior Captain Philip Alley with crew Devon Furlong '13 went out knowing that they needed a good set to bring us back into contention. They went out and took a 6, 9 which was only three points better than the 8th place team, moving us a little closer, but still 12 points out. A DSQ for another team put us one point closer and we sat 11 points back heading into the final B races. B Division was skippered by Freshman Duncan Howes '15, who at the time was averaging over a 12 for the day. We discussed a plan for the final two races, and decided it was best to avoid the match race scenario, and just go for solid finishes. Match racing the other boat might only yield us a few points in the final two races, and we needed to put 11 points between us and the 8th place team. When Devon came off the water from A Division we decided to keep her in for the final two races due to the fact that she had just seen the changing conditions. The pair ended the day with a 1, 2 finish and moved the team into 8th place, the final qualifying spot. We spent the races pacing around the docks, and envisioning the improbable close to our championship. Duncan hit the dock only to be tackled into the water by his fellow skipper Phil, and the team only had one flight left, the smiles that were irresistible across their faces. For the second year in a row we would jump through the ranks and make it to the next round. Sailors at the America Trophy were Philip Alley '12, Martha Peterson '12, Devon Furlong '13, Della Bradt '13, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Duncan Howes '15, Greg Reppucci '15, and Alex Gatto '15.

Philip Alley '12 is awarded the Purrington Award

"This award is to be given to the graduating senior from MAISA each year who has made outstanding contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts, not only by competing, but in the promotion of the sport, by fostering sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and contributing to the overall performance of our conference. The recipient is not necessarily the best sailor in MAISA but embodies the selfless spirit of true competition and commitment to excellence in support of college sailing in our conference."

MAISA Spring Open: 8th of 16

This weekend the team traveled to Annapolis, MD for a beautiful weekend at the MAISA Spring Open hosted by the Naval Academy. On Saturday, a west wind between 5 and 10 knots made shifty and challenging conditions, making it necessary to stay focused and adjust to changing conditions throughout each race. There was a short delay after lunch waiting for the wind to settle in again but 12 races were still able to be completed on Saturday. The remaining 4 races were completed by 11:30 on Sunday with steady 7-10 knot southerly breeze. The team did a great job working with the tough conditions in both 420 and FJ fleets and finished the event in 8th. Skipper Hillary Paulsen '13 with crew Becca Macies '14 sailed in A Division while skipper Colin Keil '15 with crew Chris Spencer '14 sailed in B Division.

Thank you to the Bradt family for hosting the team and to the Spencers for coming down to watch and cheer us on.

April 7 - 8

The Captain Prosser Trophy: 8th of 8

Philip Alley '12, Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, Juliet Levine '14, Devon Furlong '13, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Duncan Howes '15, Greg Reppucci '15 and Coach Brian Clancy at St. Mary's.

On the weekend of March 17-18, the Team traveled to KP and competed in the Team Race Challenge. Winning the event, the team qualified for the Captain Prosser Trophy over Easter Weekend, April 7-8, hosted by St. Mary's. For the second year in a row the team would be competing at the event in which the top 8 team race teams in MAISA compete for 3 spots to compete at the Team Race Nationals in Texas in late May.

Unlike in fleet racing, there is no such thing as a "top 5" or a "mid fleet" finish. In team racing, it's win or lose, and you compile a win/loss record throughout the event. This means, that the record defines your finish, and you really have to be there to see the quality of racing for yourself. However, if you understand team racing you can appreciate that Cornell was in all of the 14 races they sailed to the leeward mark in all but 2 races. The first race was against arguably the best team at the event, Georgetown University. Cornell held a 1-2-5 combo at the weather mark, and were winning until the leeward when G-Town broke up the play and went to a 2-3-4. It hit the team with a ton of bricks that this event is intense and the racing would be tough all day. I'm very proud of the team for competing so well all the way to the end until the last race. Even with no shot of qualifying, in the final race they gave it their all and took a race off of a hot SUNY Maritime team who won a team race the previous weekend. We doubled our win total from the previous year, and can only hope that we continue to improve for next.

Skippering the event was Philip Alley '12 who sailed his final team races in college sailing, it was nice to go out with a win in the final race, and also Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, and Duncan Howes '15. The crews were shifted around to sail with all skippers at some point and they were Devon Furlong '13, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Juliet Levine '14, and Greg Reppucci '15.

Thank you to the Bradt Family for allowing the team to stay on Friday evening before the event.

President's Trophy: 11th of 13

The women's team traveled to Boston, MA over the weekend to sail at the President's Trophy at Boston University. Winds held steadily at 10-20 knots throughout the weekend, but the shifty conditions of the Charles proved to be a challenge throughout the weekend. On Saturday, the racing started with a northerly which shifted to a steady easterly, allowing for 8 races to be completed in both divisions. On Sunday, the team was met with colder temperatures and similar breeze. Keeping your head out of the boat and on top of the shifts was definitely a lesson learned this weekend. The team did a good job in tough conditions, ultimately finishing 11th.

Skippering A Division was Lauren Turner '13 with crew Erin Ahlers '13. In B was skipper Hillary Paulsen '13 with crew Kerry Close '14. Special thanks to the Ludwig Family for hosting the team over the weekend!

March 31 - April 1

North Spring Qualifier: 1st of 14

Cornell Sailors Philip Alley '12 and crew Devon Furlong '13 sailed the A Division while Duncan Howes '15 and Lindsey Ludwig '14 sailed the B Divison over the weekend at the North Spring Qualifier hosted by Cornell. The top three teams would move on to compete at the America Trophy hosted by HWS in two weeks for a chance to head to Semi-Final Nationals in May. Starting out the event was in a quick wind delay on Saturday, but in the end we had 6 races in each division in a fairly steady NorthWest breeze. After day one Cornell sat in first ahead of Fordham and Columbia. The start to Sunday was a bit rough when we took a Retire After Finish (RAF) in race 7A due to a foul at the weather mark. However we went on to win the final 3 races and held onto first place for the event. This is the third year in a row that Cornell has won this event and it was nice to get back on top after a tough outing last weekend.

Thank you to all of the Cornell sailors who helped out this weekend, Collin Clark '15, Colin Keil '15, Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, Greg Reppucci '15, Della Bradt '13, Alex Gatto '15, Chris Spencer '14, Zander Liem '15, Sonia Guior '15, Erin Ahlers '13, and Juliet Levine '14.

March 24 - 25

Boston Dinghy Cup: 17th of 18

On the tail end of Spring Break the team traveled to Boston to compete in the 3 division Boston Dinghy Cup, an event Cornell won in 1936. Unique to this event was the addition of the fleet of Fireflies that MIT recently bought from Rondar. For everyone to get a chance to sail in the Fireflies each division sailed 6 races in each fleet of boats. The other two fleets were the MIT FJ's and the Harvard FJ's. Sailing in the A Division was skipper Philip Alley '12 with crew Devon Furlong '13. It was tough going out there at times, but on the plus side they had some solid finishes to put on the board yet and finished 16th. In B Division was skipper Alden Sonnenfeldt '13 with crews Juliet Levine '14 and Martha Peterson '12. It was never easy for them in this division and they found it tough to handle the conditions that the Charles can throw out there. Although they had some great starts they had a tough time managing the fleet and finished 18th. In the C Division was skipper Duncan Howes '15 with crew Lindsey Ludwig '14. They started off great with two top finishes, had a rough stretch in the middle of the regatta and were able to finish off stronger. They finished tied for 15th in the division.

Overall I can say the team never gave up and used this event as a great opportunity to practice for our upcoming qualifiers that litter the month of April. Thank you to the Ludwig family for housing the team and providing some great meals over the weekend.

Owen, Mosbacher & Knapp Trophies: 11th of 15

The team traveled to New Haven, CT over the weekend to sail at the Owen, Mosbacher & Knapp Trophy event hosted by Yale. Winds on the first day were fairly steady and racing got underway quickly. Skipper in the A Division was Michael Rivlin '13 with crew Erin Ahlers' 13 on Saturday while Lauren Turner '13 skippered Sunday. With the stiff competition it was tough to break into the top group around the course, however they put together some decent finishes over the course of the event and finished 14th. Skippering the B Division was Jenny Borshoff '15 with crews Della Bradt '13 and Greg Reppucci '15. The B Division team had a little bit of an easier time and were able to have a great last race to put the team up to 11th for the event. I think it's encouraging how the team performed this weekend given the difficult sailing conditions Yale has to offer and the All-American filled fleet was certainly no easy task.

Special thank you to the Reppucci family for hosting the team for the weekend.

March 17 - March 18

Team Race Challenge: 1st of 8

Cornell Sailors left for Spring Break on Friday afternoon and headed to Kings Point for the Team Race Challenge. The TRC qualifies two of the eight teams for the Captain Prosser Trophy, which will be held at St. Mary's on April 7-8. The top three teams at the Prosser will qualify for the ICSA Team Race Nationals in late May.

Cornell Sailors in boats 16, 17 & 18 at Kings Point.

The team has been practicing hard all year to improve their team racing, and with two events already completed, we felt up to the task at hand. We arrived on Saturday to find no wind at all, but it quickly filled from the North and racing got underway around 10am. Cornell got off to a great start winning their first 4 races against Columbia, Villanova, Kings Point, and Princeton. We lost race 5 to Washington College when they beat us off the line and quickly sailed away in a 1-2 combination. Cornell finished the round robin beating UVA and Fordham to move to a 6-1 record and tied for the lead with WAC, but losing the tie breaker. In round two Cornell once again started well and won 4 straight races, again heading into the WAC race. It was a battle all the way around the course, but on the final beat to the finish Cornell capitalized on a WAC foul, and move to the winning combination to take the race. Cornell finished off the round with a 7-0 record and move to 13-1 overall sitting in first over WAC who was 12-2.

Sunday's conditions never materialized enough to get things going and no races were completed. This meant that Cornell won the Team Race Challenge and would be heading off to the Prosser in a couple weeks! This will be the second year in a row that Cornell will compete in the Conference Championship team race. Great job to the team in their preparation for the event, and their ability to execute plays when needed throughout the racing. Skippers traveling to the event were Philip Alley '12, Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, Duncan Howes '15, and Michael Rivlin '13, while the crews were Martha Peterson '12, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Devon Furlong '13, Juliet Levine '14, and Greg Reppucci '15.

Thank you very much to the Peterson family for hosting the team in New Rochelle for the weekend.

St. Mary's Women's Intersectional: 15th of 18

Erin Ahlers '13, Jenny Borshoff '15, Della Bradt '13 & Lauren Turner '13 on the docks at St. Mary's College.

For the second weekend in a row Cornell Women's sailors went to compete at a high level intersectional. This weekend skippering the A Division was Jenny Borshoff '15 and B Division was Lauren Turner '13 at the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional. Crewing in the 420 for the whole event was Erin Ahlers '13 and crewing in the FJ was Della Bradt '13. The conditions throughout the weekend were marginal at best with regards to the wind ranging from about 0-8 and very shifty. On the plus side the sun was shining and temperatures were 70+, pretty nice for early March.

We started off strong in the first few sets with some top three finishes and more consistent results than the rest of the field. After Saturday the team was sitting in 14th, but given the conditions, the results were very close. All we could hope for was our chances on Sunday. Unfortunately the breeze was never consistent enough, and only a couple races were held on Sunday. Without sufficient opportunities to put up some lower scores, we remained essentially in the same position, but finished 15th for the event. Our next women's intersectional will be April 7-8 in Boston, MA hosted by BU. If you are in the area, please come to see the racing and cheer on the Big Red!

Thank you once again to the Bradt family for hosting the team on Friday night for the event.

March 10 - 11

Navy Spring Women's Intersectional: 12th of 20

Jenny Borshoff '15 and Della Bradt '13 sailing in heavy breeze.

Women's competition opened up this weekend with the Navy Spring Women's Intersectional at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Skippering the A Division was Jenny Borshoff '15 with crew Della Bradt '13 while in B Division we had Lauren Turner '13 with crew Martha Peterson '12. Erin Alhers '13 was also present as a substitute crew, however the situation did not present itself to make any changes. It should be noted however, that Erin was a huge help on shore during the divisional rotations.

On Saturday we arrived to find a shifty NE breeze and sailing took place in the Severn River. Consistent results were hard to find, but the Cornell Sailors did a great job at sticking with the fundamentals and shaving points where they could. On Saturday we were as high as 5th place in the standings with key races and each division having a half leg first place finish. At the end of the first day we sat in 11th place overall, 3rd in B and 14th in A, but within striking distance of the top 6.

Sunday was supposed to give us some warmer temperatures, but that didn't exactly happen on the water. We had a stiff South breeze, steady around 15mph throughout the day. We opened up great and in the first 5 races we had a first, a second, and a third on the scorecard. It was looking up for the Big Red. Team went in for a lunch break around 12:30 before heading back out for the final four races in each division. Early mistakes off the starting line and a few unfortunate 720's yielded some tough finishes down the stretch and Cornell failed to reach their hopeful overall finish for the event, but nevertheless a 12th place finish in the thick of things with the best teams in the country was well worth the effort. In B division we really shined this weekend finishing with 12 races in the top 10 and 5 in the top 3, we finished 6th in B at the end of the event. A Division also had moments to show what they can do winning two of the races and finishing 15th overall. This was really a great weekend for Cornell Women's competition and we're excited for the rest of the season.

Special thank you to the support from the Bradt family for housing the team in Bethesda, MD and coming to watch the racing.

John Jackson Team Race: 7th of 8

The John Jackson Team Race marked the second team race event of the season for Cornell. Eight teams from across NEISA and MAISA attended the intersectional and races were run with two fleets of FJs and one fleet of 420s. The Georgetown sailing venue greeted the team with sunny skies and a chilly breeze from the North Saturday morning. The course was set in the tight quarters of the lagoon off the Washington Sailing Marina making for extremely shifty and puffy breeze.

Duncan Howes '15, Juliet Levine '14, Philip Alley '12, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Devon Furlong '13 and Alden Sonnenfeldt '13 at the John Jackson Team Race.

Racing began with wind in the 10-15knt range with frequent shifts of up to 50 degrees. The Cornell sailors got off to a slow start; despite several close races, they were not able to secure any victories in the morning. Things came together for Cornell towards the end of the day, winning two of their last three races. Saturday ended around 3pm with the completion of the first round robin and the wind dying off in the lagoon.

Sunday's racing began with 6-12knt breeze from the SW, an even shiftier direction than seen on Saturday. The conditions demanded everyone staying on their toes and being able to adapt the play to fast and unpredictable shifts in the races. The day started well for Cornell with several W's early on, and throughout the day the team felt better and better with their performance. The team greatly improved on starts and boat to boat communication during races, both being goals going into the event. The John Jackson proved to be a great tune up for the coming Team Race Challenge in one week.

Sailing the event were skippers Philip Alley '12, Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, and Duncan Howes '15 with crews Devon Furlong '13, Juliet Levine '14, and Lindsey Ludwig '14. Thank you to the Bradt family for hosting the team.

Please see the full results and scoring grid here.

Graham Hall Team Race: 15th of 16

Cornell vs. Eckerd: Philip Alley '12 and Greg Reppucci '15 in boat 10, and Alden Sonnefeldt '13 and Della Bradt '13 in boat 12. (Photo credit: Diane Tipton)

The first regatta of the Spring Season was once again the Graham Hall Team Race at the US Naval Academy. Sixteen teams from around the country showed up to Navy to compete in the early season event. With ten practice days on the water in Ithaca, the team was excited to sail at a different location and race against some of the other schools for a change.

We arrived Saturday morning with some rain and little wind, but following the skippers meeting a light WNW breeze filled in over the Crown Center and we got racing underway. Cornell had a tough start to the regatta, simply because we had trouble getting off the start line, but we were able to clean it up by the end and were right in the thick of things for most of the races. At the end of the day Cornell had won races against Eckerd and Clemson putting the team in 14th of 16 after Saturday. On Sunday, we expected to see breeze from a similar direction, but perhaps with a bit more velocity. Well, we were wrong, and we got a lot more velocity. Again it was WNW, but anywhere from 15-22 mph with huge gusts. Needless to say it would be a physical day on the water. Cornell was in the Silver fleet and was sailing much better throughout the afternoon. We took a race off of 16th ranked Wisconsin early on, and had some nail biters in the others. It's important to say that while this was another learning experience from the team, we sailed well in a lot of situations and are looking forward to the remainder of the season. This regatta certainly made us hungry to get back out there.

Sailing at the event was Philip Alley '12, Martha Peterson '12, Duncan Howes '15, Alden Sonnenfeldt '13, Devon Furlong '13, Della Bradt '13, Lindsey Ludwig '14, Zander Liem '15, and Greg Reppucci '15. Everyone that traveled played a pivotal role in the event. Thank you so much to the Bradt Family for housing the team in Bethesda Maryland. The steak dinner was a great feast leading into the cold and wet Sunday racing. Also thank you to those who came out to water the team, it's great to have the support at the events.
