Spring Performance
2004

The Cornell Savoyards present a delightful double bill featuring a fresh take on the story of Cinderella and a judicious Gilbert & Sullivan favorite.

The True Story of Cinderella offers a unique and enchanting look at the classic fairy tale. Written in 1955 by Westminster Choir College professor Warren Martin, it was originally designed to provide May Day entertainment for the students. The show is a clever spoof both of various musical styles and the well-known story. The Savoyard version holds true to the composer’s original intent and will be performed oratorio style. The ensemble cast will feature Karen Dumont as Cinderella, Mark Lawrence as the Prince, Kris Park as the Queen, Doug Mathews as the King and a bevy of other hilarious characters, from fairy godmothers to hermits, with Greg Busby, Diane Downing, Sam Ehrlichman, Lisa Frank, Jennifer Giroux, Don Lawrence, Sherry Scanza, Meagan Johnson Smith and Arthur Woll. The show will be directed by Jennifer Lawrence
Birnbaum with piano accompaniment by Bill Cowdery and Beverly Schmidt.

In Gilbert and Sullivan’s all-singing Trial by Jury, a jilted bride sues for breach of promise of marriage: the Defendant (Matt Green) has found a new love. The judge (Doug Matthews) and jury are much taken with the Plaintiff (Amanda Smith), while her bridesmaids certainly seem enamored of the Defendant. The Defendant offers to "marry this lady today and marry the other tomorrow." The courtroom ponders this “nice dilemma” and the judge sets an imaginative precedent to happily settle the case. As directed by Bryan VanCampen with Scott Miller and Emily Hanna, “Trial by Jury” lives up to its cheerfully anarchic tone, with wonderful songs scattered throughout! The cast includes Amy Bentley, Chad Dumont, Lisa Frank, Jennifer Giroux, Carol Lawrence, Saren Seeley, Melissa Snyder and Arthur Woll.
