Scitech – Layout Cheat Sheet

From the CD you get at the production session, find your folder which will have in it the final version of the article as a word document and any image files that the writer has provided.

Master Pages

  1. Go to Window -->Show Master Pages to bring up the Master Pages available
  2. Do NOT edit the Master Pages, i.e. when editing your pagemaker file, make sure the highlighted pages (in black) are not the LR pages. Also, in the Master Pages box, it should say “Applying Master Pages”
  3. To select a master page layout, just click on the master page that you want from the Master Pages Box

Laying out Text

  1. Do NOT link text. Cut and Paste from Word or whatever other text editor you use.
  2. Text should be in 3 columns:
(di, explain here how to set up column guides)
  3. Preferably 11 pt font, but if the article is really too short, then up to 12 pt is okay.
  4. Justify the alignment
  5. Do NOT use multiple text boxes! Instead, thread the text blocks, so that the entire article is contained within one text box:
(di, explain here how to set up threading)

Laying out Images

  1. Do NOT cut and paste images. Place them by pressing Ctrl-D or selecting File --> Place from the menu
  2. When asked whether to include the file in the publication, or link it, always link the file. This will show up on the screen in a low-res format, but if the link is correct, it will be fine.
  3. Captions should go underneath the picture in 10 pt font
  4. All captions should be immediately followed by permission credits in parends, italicised, also 10 pt font.
    e.g.

Finishing Up

  1. Check all the links in Link Manager. Get to this by selecting File --> Links Manager from the menu and seeing that there are no question marks beside any of the images that you have in your file
  2. Doublecheck links!
  3. Change the page numbers to match the ones as given in the Layout excel file
(di, explain here how to rename pages)
  4. Rename your Pagemaker file as something reasonable, e.g. layout.pmd is not a good filename, but diane_layout_pgs17to19.pmd is good.
