Seven Spirits Kung Fu - Guiding Principles

In addition to martial arts skill, members must cultivate the five virtues of Trust, Reverence, Humility, Respect, and Forbearance. Such cultivation will allow the members of the organization to extend their training to their daily lives and which will lead to an understanding of compassion, or harmonizing in spirit.

  • Trust – Tín Ngưỡng Tâm

  • Trust is faith in the potential goodness of all people. Trust means never expecting ill of others and creating good acts without fear of others. Trust is difficult, because one must become vulnerable to practice it. However, practice trust and one may perfect compassion.

  • Reverence - Ngưỡng Mộ Tâm

  • Reverence is an appreciation of the Tradition, an awe for people of great virtue, and an aspiration to achieve such virtue. For the more spiritual, Reverence also means observation of the ancestors (Tôn Tổ).

  • Humility – Khiêm Tốn Tâm

  • Humility is recognizing one’s weaknesses. We are all weak in many ways. If one is not ashamed by this and embraces such a truth, has faith in the goodness of others, and observes the Tradition, one can grow. One will never grow if one is not humble.

  • Respect – Tôn Trọng Tâm

  • Respect is treasuring the experiences of others. Everyone has their own story to tell. Everyone’s story is unique. Listen and there is much to learn from one another. We must respect what others may have to teach us.

  • Forbearance - Kiên Nhẫn Tâm

  • Forbearance is to suffer for another. We may be wronged by others, but we must have faith in goodness and not blame them. Anger and retaliation are easy reactions, but instead we are willing to suffer so that goodness may win out in the end. Otherwise, we are slaves to evil cycles.
