After Final Weekend, Men 1st, Women 3rd on the Season

Feb 18, 2008

This weekend, the alpine team traveled to Toggenburg Ski Area for their final race of the season. The men skied well in the giant slalom on Saturday, finishing strong in second place. Of their four finishers, all four were in the top ten, led by freshmen Robert Abelson ’11 (4th) and followed closely by Bruce Hamlin ’10 (5th), Brandon Collins ’08 (6th), and Chad Kossar ‘10 (10th). The women struggled in the GS race, falling into fifth after struggling with a challenging course set. They were led by Elizabeth Loftus ’10 (14th) and Sarah Yakin ’08 (15th), and Katie Post ’09 (18th).

On Sunday morning, through a tight course and blustering winds, the men dominated the first run of the slalom, setting all five of their starters into the top eight (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th). However, when they went out to inspect the course for the second run, the weather had turned to a miserable rain, which led to struggles in the second run. The men finished in second for the day, and the weekend. The team kept all five of their starters in the top fifteen, with Hamlin leading the charge in 4th. He was followed up by Collins (5th), Kossar (7th), Peter O’Brien ’08 (10th), and Abelson (12th). The women also put up a great result, finishing 3rd in the slalom to place them in fourth for the weekend. They stacked their entire starting lineup into the top 21, with strong finishes from Callan Space ’09 (5th), Loftus (8th), Yakin (10th), Rebecca Smith ‘11 (16th), and Heather Merkis ’10 (21st).

Upon reaching the end of the regular season, both the men’s and women’s alpine team have qualified to compete at the United States Collegiate Ski Association’s Middle Eastern Conference Regional Championships, which will be held February 22nd & 23rd. The giant slalom will be held on the 22nd at Labrador Mountain, and the slalom will be on the 23rd at Toggenburg Ski Area. The men finished their season as Empire Division Champions, claiming victory over the rest of their division for the first time in years. The women finished their season in outstanding form, claiming third place for the division. We would also like to congratulate the following individuals, who were named to the All Conference Team for their outstanding individual performances over the course of the season:

      Brandon Collins

      Robert Abelson

      Chad Kossar

      Peter O’Brien

Men 1st, Women 2nd at Home Race

Feb 11, 2008

This weekend, the alpine team hosted their home race at Song Mountain. Through a lot of hard work, and a great effort from the team (especially the captains), they were able to pull off a great race. The men skied a strong GS race on Saturday. After finishing just five hundredths of a second behind Syracuse after the first run, they attacked hard on the second run. However, they were unable to overcome the strong times posted by Syracuse, taking second place by a slim margin of 0.02 seconds. Captain Brandon Collins ’08 led the team, winning the race with a time of 1.24.94. His podium was backed up by solid finishes from Bruce Hamlin ’10 (5th), Robert Abelson ‘11(6th), Chad Kossar ‘10 (13th) and Tucker Moffat ’10 (18th). The women skied a phenomenal GS race, squeaking into second by three tenths of a second over Ithaca College. They were led by top Callan Space ’09 with a 4th place finish. Elizabeth Loftus ’10 and Sarah Yakin ’08 tied for 13th, and Katie Post ’09 put down some solid skiing to finish 22nd.

On Sunday morning, under blue skies and sunshine, the men refused to allow Syracuse to take home a win from their home hill. They dominated the first run, leading by a margin of 2.6 seconds. Then while setting the course for the second run, the weather made a drastic change (like it is known to do around Ithaca). With blowing snow and wind gusts exceeding 40 mph, the timing equipment could not function properly, and the second run was cancelled. The men won the day, and the weekend, thus clinching the title of Division Champions. The team put all five of their starters into the top ten, with Abelson winning the slalom. He was followed up by Collins (6th), Hamlin (7th), Peter O’Brien ’08 (8th), and Kossar (9th). The women also put up a great result, finishing 3rd in the slalom to place them in second for the weekend. They stacked their entire starting lineup into the top 20, with finishes from Loftus (4th), Space (7th), Post (10th), Yakin (12th), and Rebecca Smith ’11 (19th).

Also this week, the ski team held their annual phonathon, in order to raise money to help to pay for some of the team’s expenses, and to help reduce the direct costs to the racers. The phonathon was a huge success, and the team raised over $4,000. We would like to thank all of our participating alumni for their generous gifts. Next week will be the last race of the regular season, and will be hosted by Syracuse University at Toggenburg ski area.

Cornell takes 2nd, 3rd at Rochester Invitational

Feb 04, 2008

Following two consecutive victorious weekends, this weekend the alpine team traveled to Bristol Mountain to compete in their third race of the season. The men struggled with a difficult course set on Saturday, finishing only three of their five starters. However, they were still able to hang on to second place, settling in behind Syracuse University in the giant slalom. Captain Brandon Collins ’08 led the team with a 3rd place finish. His podium was backed up by solid finishes from Chad Kossar ‘10 and Tucker Moffat ’10 who finished 8th and 17th respectively. The women skied a strong GS race, placing third as a team. They were led by top finishers Callan Space ’09 (4th), Elizabeth Loftus ’10 (12th), and Katie Post ’09 (13th).

On Sunday, the men faced a tough slalom course without two of their strongest skiers. The men still finished in third however, putting four starters in the top 15, and taking home second for the weekend. The team was again led by Collins (4th) and a great finish from Ben Flink ’08 (7th). Rounding out the team was some spectacular skiing by Moffat (11th), Kossar (15th), and Peter O’Brien ’08 (20th). The women, also short two skiers from their starting lineup, pulled out some spectacular skiing of their own, finishing 3rd in the slalom to place them in third for the weekend. They stacked their entire starting lineup into the top 15, with finishes from Space (5th), Loftus (9th), Post (12th), Emily Dally ’09 (13th) and two strong runs from the newly acquired freshman Rebecca Smith ’11 (15th). Next weekend, the alpine team will be hosting a race at Song Mountain, looking to tear it up on their home turf. We would like to encourage anyone in the area to come out and support the team!

The team was again led by Collins (2nd) and a podium finish for Abelson (3rd). Rounding out the top 15 was some spectacular skiing by Hamlin (5th), Chad Kossar ’10 (7th), and Peter O’Brien ’08 (12th).
