Belt Systems and Requirements
The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)
The WTF is the world governing body of Tae Kwon Do. It was established in 1973 making Tae Kwon Do a truly unique martial art. No other martial art in the world is as unified as Tae Kwon Do and it is currently the world's most popular martial art. It is also one of very few martial arts that is recognized by the International Olympic Committee with competition every four years in the Summer Olympic Games.
For color belts, there are 8 official WTF poomsae called Taegeuk Forms. After being promoted through each belt to the highest color belt ranking of 1st gup, a student is eligible to test for black belt. After receiving a black belt, there are 9 rankings (1st Dan through 9th Dan), each with one form.
The Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC)
ECTC tournaments are broken into 5 divisions for forms and 4 divisions for sparring. Poomsae divisions are broken up as follows:
- White and Yellow Belts: Taegeuks 1 and 2
- Green Belts: Taegeuks 3 and 4
- Blue Belts: Taegeuks 5 and 6
- Red and Brown Belts: Taegeuks 7 and 8
- Black Belts
There is only one allowed form at each tournament for black belts to perform (Koryo, Keumgang or Taebaek). Information on which form will be allowed at a given tournament can be found in the tournament invitation on the ECTC website.
Sparring is broken into the following divisions:
- D Team: No previous experience
- C Team: Strictly below Blue Belt ranking
- B Team: All color belts
- A Team: Black belts and all color belts
All poomsae and sparring divisions except D Team can score points for the competitors' representative schools, meaning that all members of a team can contribute. Attacks to the head are forbidden in C Team and D Team sparring. Point charts and full rules on eligibility for each round can be found on the ECTC webpage.
