Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday classes (in bold) are in the Helen Newman Dance Studio and are the only official Cornell PE classes. Students must attend at least 11 official classes to satisfy Cornell requirements, but are welcome and encouraged to attend as many appropriate-level classes as possible.
Classes run from the first full week of school until the last week of classes (they do not run during reading period or exam period). NOTE: In order to participate in any class a liability waiver is required.
Beginner Class (white/yellow belts, first semester) - Full
instructional workout, including basics, forms, sparring steps,
one-steps, and boxing steps. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at
Helen Newman Dance Studio.
Advanced Class (yellow to black belts) - Full workout,
faster-paced. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Helen Newman Dance Studio.
Club Hours/Requirements (all belts) - Self-paced class for
learning requirements for belt tests and getting tapes. Green stripes
and higher ranks should attend several of these classes and test for
tapes well in advance of the belt test. None currently scheduled.
Stay tuned for in-class announcements and e-mails.
Grappling Class (yellow to black belts) - In-depth work on
grappling on the mats at the dojang. These classes are encouraged for
a fuller understanding than the minimal grappling covered at Helen
Newman. Students will pair up and work with partners. Cup and mouth
guard required. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Dojang in Lansing Mall.
Team Training (yellow to black belts) - Intense workout
intended for those competing in INCTL tournaments. These sessions
are very likely to last longer than scheduled. Tuesday evenings
and Saturday afternoons. More may be scheduled over the listserv.
Bring plenty of water and running shoes if the weather is appropriate
for outdoor sprints or distance running.
Sparring Class (yellow to black belts) - Students will pair
up for friendly full-contact sparring. Some protective equipment is
available at the Dojang, but most students buy their
own. See the Sparring section for more
details.
Boxing Class (yellow to black belts) - Classes may be scheduled
to give students time to practice boxing with the bags at the Dojang.
Yet unannounced, keep an eye on the listserv for more information. Hand wraps
and gloves are provided, but many students buy their own
wraps.
