Etiquette

Taekwondo etiquette is very important to the development of a taekwondoist. It demonstrates discipline and respect. The higher you progress in taekwondo, the more important these rules become.

Posture:

Make sure that when bowing, you begin from a position of attention with your head bent 45 desgrees and your back at 15 degrees. When seated make sure that your legs are crossed at all times and your back is straight, with your hands over your knees.

Encounters:

When entering the dojang you must bow to the flag, to the teacher, and all other higher-ranking black belts. There should not be unecessary conversation in the dojang. Always address higher ranks as sohn bae nim (pronounced sawn bay nim), and your instructors as kyo sa nim (pronounced kee-yo sah nim). Always address Master cho as sa bum nim (pronounced sah bum nim). Except on special occaisions do not wear your uniform when coming to or going from class. Always use words like "sir" and "ma'am" when speaking to any higher rank, regarless of their age.

Uniform:

Care of your uniform is very important. It must be kept clean, and folded properly. Always wear your uniform neatly. Only adjust your uniform when you have stopped your action and turned away from the flag and others, most importantly higher ranks. Never wear a belt higher or lower than your current rank. If you do not have a uniform you should stand in the rear of the class behind those who are properly dressed.

Knowledge:

Only learn the forms and requirements up to and including your rank. To learn higher is to show disrespect for the ranking system and higher ranks.
