The battle of Ithaca, NY saw Cornell University blank local rival Ithaca
College 65-0 in the Big Red's opening union match. Christina Killourhy (12)
led the squad with three tries, while Molly Melhem (11), Stephanie Martinez (9)
and Laura Tagatac (13) each found the tri-zone twice. Ithaca College was able
to mount several strong offensive drives in the second half. However, the Big Red
seized upon several Renegade mistakes and missteps to maintain the shutout.

The Cornell Women's Rugby team kicked off its season at the Beantown Tournament.

Game results and summaries are below.
Cornell 12
UMass 5

Scoring:

6:00 - UMass, no conversion
8:30 - Cornell (13) Christina Killourhy, conversion (10) Meg Crapster-Pregont
34:00 - Cornell (13) Christina Killourhy, no conversion

A young UMass and Cornell squad opened up their competitve season in Amherst, MA
at the annual Beantown Tournament. UMass seized momentum off kickoff, pinning Cornell
deep in its own terriority during the game's opening minutes. The Minutewomen backline
put UMass ahead at the 6-minute mark. Cornell responded 2 minutes later when flyhalf Meg
Crapster-Pregont took the ball weakside off a Big Red scrum. She connected with U-19
standout Christina Killourhy to even up the match, then put Cornell ahead with a nice
conversion. Neither team was able to break the game open until late in the second half
when Killourhy found the tri-zone for the second time after Cornell was able to steal
possession off a UMass ruck. In classic UMass-Cornell style, the game was a low-scoring
defensive battle.

Cornell 0
Penn State 20

Scoring:

5:00 - Penn State, no conversion
6:30 - Penn State, no conversion
30:00 - Penn State, no conversion
32:00 - Penn State, no conversion

Penn State's precision mauling was too much for Cornell to handle as the
Nittany Lions shutout the Big Red in the second match of the day. While
Cornell had several opportunities for big plays, Penn State's defense
quickly eliminated any chance for Cornell to get back into the game. Penn
State began scoring with a driving maul in the fifth minute and seized
momentum to score again 2 minutes later. Several nice defensive stands by
the Big Red kept the game at 10-0 going into halftime. While Cornell
increased their intensity in the second half, they again fell victim to
Penn State's well-executed mauling which resulted in another Penn State
tri with 10 minutes remaining. Missed tackles by Cornell allowed Penn
State to put up another 5 points minutes later.

Cornell 21
UCSD 12

Scoring:

6:00 - UCSD, conversion
17:30 - UCSD, no conversion
24:00 - Cornell, (13) Christina Killourhy, conversion (10) Meg Crapster-Pregont
29:30 - Cornell, (13) Christina Killourhy, conversion (10) Meg Crapster-Pregont
34:00 - Cornell, (15) Laura Tagatac, conversion (10) Meg Crapster-Pregont

UCSD seized on early Cornell mistakes and penalities to take a 12-0 lead
at halftime. The Tritons gutsy, aggressive style seemed to catch Cornell
off guard as they were able to pressure Cornell possession very
effectively. While the first 20 minutes saw UCSD build momentum and
dominate, the second half was all Cornell. Center Christina Killourhy was
able to break through the Triton defense to put Cornell on the board. Five
minutes later a bad pass by UCSD was stolen by Killourhy and taken the
distance for her fourth tri of the tournament. After two successful
Crapster-Pregont conversions, Cornell marched down the field and a well
executed backplay put fullback Laura Tagatac into the tri-zone for the
final tri of the day. Meg Crapster-Pregont was perfect from the tee,
converting the final tri to put Cornell up 21-12.

Ivy League Tournament

(#7 Seed) Cornell 7 v. (#2 Seed) Brown 0
Saturday April 8 2006

Despite the non-stop rain and mud-puddled field, Cornell Women were able
to shut out second seeded Brown. Cornell controlled the forwards game,
tricking Brown with lineouts and holding the scrum in the slippery mud.
There were few mistakes in the rain for CWRFC, allowing Cornell to attempt
two points kicks, which did not score, and giving Cornell several
opportunities near Brown's try-line. After frustrating and countless
attempts, center Adrienne Wilson finally powered through Brown's backline
to score the game-winning try.

Cornell 0 v. (#4 Seed) Radcliffe 29
Sunday April 9 2006

Cornell faced nationally ranked Radcliffe on Sunday as the game was rained
out Saturday. It seemed from the get-go that Cornell was not on its game,
allowing Radcliffe to score early and often with little oppostion in the
first half. Cornell picked it up and had several near-tries, keeping on
Radcliffes half of the field consistently, though could not convert any
efforts into points. Radcliffe's backline out-played Cornell's defense,
slipping through holes easily. Adrienne Wilson stepped into Meg
Crapster-Pregont's flyhalf position as she received 8 stitches, and
Cornell had to adjust to new players in new postions, but used the kicking
game to hold off Radcliffe in the late second half.

Cornell 7 v. (#1 Seed) Princeton 0
Ready for revenge after a poorly-played 9am game vs. Radcliffe, Cornell
came out strong on defense, forcing Princeton back into their own half
with hard hits and intensity. The Cornell backline gained ground on every
play, with the centers powering the ball easily through Princeton's backs.
Freshman Angela Garza single-handedly downed half of Princeton's forwards
with every punch, and Meg Crapster-Pregont ran 40 meters for a near-try in
the second half. Cornell camped out on Princeton's half for most of the
game, shutting down Princeton on defense but finding it difficult to get
the ball over the try-line from a meter or two out on several occasions.
As happened in the Brown game a day earlier, in the last few minutes of
the game, center Adrienne Wilson powered the ball through Princton's line
for the game-winning try and Meg C-P converted the kick for a 7-0 win.
Cornell took third in the tournament.

Match Reports
September 18: CU A-side 18 - UB 24
scoring:
Meg Crapster-Pregont 3 2 3
Raeane Miller 5
Molly Melhem 5
Cornell controlled game in terms of stealing scrums and strong rucks, but
UB's quick backline stole around the side one too many times against the
Cornell women. UB scored first but Cornell came back with kicks through
the posts by Meg Crapster-Pregont followed by a deep kick to the corner,
fielded in the try zone by Molly Melhem. Rae Miller capped a long drive
with a great run for the second try. Meg with another kick for points and a
try kept Cornell ahead until the final minutes of the game when UB blew
through the defensive line and scored their game-winning try and
conversion. Learning experience for the Big Red who haven't lost a reg.
season game in years. Cornell is ready to face Syracuse next weekend
after making some adjustments and seeing UB in the playoffs for a rematch.

September 25: CU B-side 8 - WS 12
Sunday's game may have been a three-point loss to William Smith, but it
was still considered an overall success by Cornell's largely rookie B-side
team. Jumping headfirst into the world of competetive rugby in their first
full game, the Killer B's held their own against their foes; veteran Randi
Goldman scored the lone try for Cornell, and newcomer Amy Pearlman
nailed a penalty kick for an extra three points. William Smith
may have taken the win, but they didn't have the heart of the Killer B's;
even the injured ruggers walked off the pitch smiling.

October 8: CU B-Side 10 - Niagara 10
The dawn of the day the Cornell Killer B's were scheduled to play the
top-ranked Division III team from Niagara dawned cold, grey, and rainy, and
looked bleak for the short-handed Cornell team. Fall break had reduced
their numbers to exactly fifteen, and the odds did not look good. However,
the die-hards who held off their vacation in favor of rucking about in the
mud rallied and tied Niagra 10-10, even after losing two players to
injuries. A try was scored by freshman Laura "Sharpie" Sharpless and a few
extra points sprang from the toe of the boot of Lauren.
